Professional Research Assistant

Job description

University of Colorado - School of Medicine

Professional Research Assistant

The University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.

Benam Lab at the Department of Medicine invites applications for motivated, passionate and driven individuals for Professional Research Assistant (PRA) position in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado at the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Advances in microsystems engineering have recently made it possible to create biomimetic microfluidic cell culture devices, known as ‘Organs-on-Chips', that contain continuously perfused microchannels lined by living human cells that recapitulate the multicellular architectures, tissue-tissue interfaces, physicochemical microenvironments and vascular perfusion of the body, which potentially offer new opportunities for disease modeling, drug development and mechanistic studies. The Benam Lab (https://benamlab.net) at the University of Colorado has adapted this approach to create a microfluidic human ‘Lung Small Airway-on-a-Chip' to accurately reconstitute normal airway physiology, and mimic complex human asthmatic and COPD inflammatory processes and immunepathologies in vitro (Nature Methods 2016;13(2): 151-157). Moreover, most recently we described a new in vitro model system (Breathing-Smoking Lung Chip technology) that permits analysis of the effects of whole smoke, from both conventional tobacco and electronic cigarettes, delivered under physiologically relevant flow conditions that mimic breathing on the pathophysiology of differentiated human mucociliated bronchiolar epithelium (Cell Systems 2016; 3(5): 456-466.e4).

Position Summary:

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Lab Technician/Professional Research Assistant. This full-time position for an initial length of 12 months with possibility of extension for additional 2 years upon successful completion. Ideally, the candidate has expertise in lung cell biology, immunology or tissue engineering. Familiarity with microfluidic systems and chip microfabrication is a plus, but not essential. Our laboratory offers a unique interdisciplinary research ecosystem within Pulmonary Division of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, which is the largest and a highly reputable Division in the U.S.A, and in the world; in conjunction with the Department of Bioengineering. Moreover, our laboratory pursues high-risk research and is translationally focused, with the aim of positively impacting human health and our society through our discoveries.

Duties:

The PRA will work on projects that lie at the interface of respiratory medicine, immuno-microbiology, tissue engineering, and systems and synthetic biology. More specifically, responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Assisting in development of Next-Generation Human Lung Airway Chip technologies.
  2. Conducting studies on toxico-pathology of emerging tobacco-related products.
  3. Supporting engineering (microfabrication, 3D bioprinting, etc.) of additional Organs-on-Chips and bioartificial organs.
  4. Performing in vitro cell culture and animal studies as requested.
  5. Animal care related to research procedures.
  6. Performing DNA/RNA isolation and viral transduction.
  7. Working with retroviruses, lentiviruses and other viral and non-viral delivery systems.
