The Department of Pediatrics Section of Child Neurology has an opening for a full-time board certified (or board eligible) Assistant Professor. This individual will have specific responsibility for the development and implementation of a program within Oncology (Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders), with specific emphasis on the neuropsychologic care of children who are post-treatment for both solid and liquid tumors (via HOPE clinic Helping Oncology Patients Excel), and patients pre- and post Bone Marrow Transplant. This neuropsychologist will be responsible for the development and implementation of a range of services, including screening, monitoring, focused, and comprehensive assessment and transition to adult care for this population. The position is integrated in Neurology with the opportunity to work with other neuropsychologists, and to maintain exposure to a variety of patient populations for professional development, as well as to allow for cross-coverage. There is a Wellness program within Oncology to provide psychological care and support to patients. We are concurrently recruiting a faculty member who will be integrated into Oncology, with specific focus on the evaluation of children treated for CNS neoplasms. Faculty rank is dependent upon experience and past productivity.
Faculty members are expected to participate in training of externs, interns and post-doctoral fellows in Neuropsychology, and to provide training in long-term follow-up for residents and fellows in Oncology. Research/Scholarly productivity is required for promotion. Patients are seen at the Children's Hospital Colorado, on the main campus in Aurora, and at Network of Care sites. The neuropsychologist should anticipate seeing patients at both venues. The neuropsychologists at CHCO are supported by psychometrists to assist in assessment.
This is a joint recruitment between the sections of Neurology and Oncology.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Direct in and out patient neuropsychological consultations including screening, monitoring, traditional comprehensive exams, as well as multidisciplinary, and short targeted exams with patients as they progress thru treatment of non-CNS neoplastic disease
- Traditional comprehensive assessments of general neuropsychology patients in the neuropsychology clinic as possible;
- Development of tools to be used in the Oncology clinic to screen and monitor patients, as appropriate
- Coordination with the members of the Wellness Team in Oncology to promote psychosocial adaptation;
- Involvement in long-term survivors' clinic; HOPE clinic (Helping Oncology Patients Excel);
- Development and implementation of a transition to adulthood program especially geared to emancipation and work for patients with non-CNS oncologic disease;
- Pre-and post BMT assessments;
- All faculty participate and contribute to the training of externs, interns, and post-doctoral fellows in neuropsychology including supervision and engagement in didactic sessions. Coordination with the Oncology training program to provide exposure to long term cognitive needs in children who have been treated for neoplastic disease is anticipated;
- Faculty contribute to program development including involvement in ongoing QI projects;
- Faculty are expected to demonstrate scholarly and research productivity and growth, including, but not limited to clinical research, literature reviews, involvement in the development of training or clinical guidelines. The development of successful, systematic and measurable approaches to facilitating successful psychosocial adjustment in children treated for cancer completed in coordination with oncologists.
- A Ph.D., or Psy.D. in clinical psychology, as well as an internship and postdoctoral program in Pediatric Neuropsychology;
- Candidates must be eligible for licensure in Colorado, have passed the EPPP and satisfied the requirements for certification as a neuropsychologist by the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology. Board certification is required within 5 years of joining the faculty in order to maintain medical staff privileges in neuropsychology;
- Candidates must demonstrate 3-5 years of experience, in providing care to children who are diagnosed with or treated for non-CNS neoplastic disease;
- Candidates must demonstrate experience in providing multiple types of neuropsychological care (e.g. beyond comprehensive exams);
- Candidates must have had prior experience in program development as demonstrated by the successful initiation and implementation of a clinical program;
- Candidates must demonstrate prior experience in the training of pre- and post-doctoral level psychologists, with a focus on teaching neuropsychological skills.
Condition of Employment
- Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrable familiarity with a range of pediatric neurologic and medical conditions that impact on CNS functioning with an emphasis on solid and liquid tumors, and survivorship issues;
- Familiarity with assessment instruments used across children and adolescents;
- The ability to create strong, and respectful helping relationships;
- Candidates must demonstrate experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams and a history of successful cooperation;
- Continued interest in understanding the impact of neoplastic disease on neuropsychological functioning;
- Skills to design and implement studies that answer questions regarding issues pertinent to the survivorship population, such as, but not limited to, the impact of medical intervention on cognition, the relationship between different test measures, more efficient and effective way of providing assessment for children, variables contributing to successful long-term outcome in children treated for neoplastic disease, the efficacy of neuropsychological recommendations, alternative ways of communicating recommendations, appropriate treatments and interventions for enhancing neuropsychological performance of those in treatment for neoplastic disease, etc. Both clinical and provision of care issues are pertinent;
- The ability to work in a group to identify and solve problems on a daily and longer term basis;
- The ability and persistence to work towards goals;
- The capacity to describe and communicate a vision of care for children with neoplastic disease and to coordinate with other professionals to reach that goal;
- The ability to recover quickly, and to adapt to stress and adversity in the face of working with an often emotionally- painful population.
- A history of successful independent academic and scholarly activity
- Experience in the supervision of psychologists, and neuropsychologists in training
- Demonstrated experience with children with cancer
