The Department of Crop Sciences seeks to fill a position for an Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Data Analytics.

This position is part of an initiative at the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences to contribute to the improvement of global human and environmental health via the food system. We intend to dramatically strengthen and expand our capacity in this arena through a seven-position cluster hire focused on Food and Agricultural Systems for Global Health. Faculty hired into these positions will lead college wide efforts in food security and global health, and participate in related campus priorities, including the Nutrition and Food Security theme of the campus strategic plan (https://blogs.illinois.edu/view/7831/601847), the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, and Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, among others.

The Department of Crop Sciences seeks an outstanding scientist for an Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Data Analytics position with a research, teaching, and outreach emphasis on data-driven agriculture. This position will develop a nationally recognized research program in applied agronomy that addresses stakeholders' needs in the areas of digital or precision agriculture while still maintaining a presence in the traditional agronomy space. The successful candidate will focus on current trends that rely on collection and interpretation of dense datasets for decision-making using an innovative combination of advanced sensors, geospatial technologies, and quantitative methods (e.g. artificial intelligence, machine learning). This position will become a leader in transforming agronomic data into knowledge that can be applied to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of global food, feed, fuel, and fiber production systems.

The successful candidate will be able to effectively engage a variety of academic cultures to advance data analytics in agriculture. Their primary affiliation will be the Department of Crop Sciences, however they will also have the opportunity to closely interact with faculty across the campus through the Center for Digital Agriculture. The Digital Agriculture initiative is a campus wide initiative focused on a joint College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) - College of Engineering effort and a Crop Science + Computer Science degree program. The candidate will be expected to deliver innovative research and educational programs at the interface of agriculture and computer science.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop an advanced technology-based research and outreach program in digital agriculture and sustainable cropping systems
Contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching programs through teaching and student advising in the Department of Crop Sciences
Collaborate with colleagues to address scientific problems that requires complex, multidisciplinary approaches in food and agricultural systems

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates must hold a Ph.D. in plant or crop sciences, agronomy, soil science, engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Post-doctoral experience demonstrating leadership of independent and team-based research is desired. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses using innovative teaching methods. The candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills and an ability to engage professionally with a diverse population from industry, farmers, faculty, staff, and students.

Research

Undergraduate Education
