I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Office of Human Research (OHR) is the administrative support office for The George Washington University Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). The IRB is responsible for the review of all research activities that involve human subjects in accordance with federal regulations. The OHR is seeking an IRB Administrator. The specific duties and responsibilities include:

Serves as a primary Institutional Review Board (IRB) resource person for full board studies. Provides guidance to investigators (i.e., faculty, staff, and students) on human subjects research submission to the IRB, and adherence to applicable policies and regulations including required training.

Analyzes IRB submission documents and confers with investigators to ensure their understanding of pre-approval documents required for approval, and as necessary, the need and purpose for additional documentation.

Responsible for preparing and presenting studies requiring full committee review, including making certain that federally mandated quorums are met, and providing all necessary information to IRB members prior to, IRB meetings to ensure that the meetings are successful.

Manages study files for research projects throughout various stages of review and approval ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of the final documents.

Serves as the facilitator during IRB meetings. Ensures that all federal regulatory requirements are met and properly documented, by consulting with the IRB Chair, Director of the Office of Human Research, and other staff for post-meeting briefings as necessary.

Prepares and distributes IRB letters to investigators concerning committee decisions and/or stipulations pertaining to proposed research studies; this documentation is a compliance function and subject to federal audit by regulatory agencies.

Ensures that the IRB Research Projects Database is current and IRB study files are properly filed.

Maintains and updates the IRB member information including rosters, CVs, and training records. Trains new IRB members.

Maintains updated information on regulations, inspections, policies, and procedures and other resources that directly impact IRB activities.

Performs other work duties as assigned. The omission of duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Proficiency with personal computers to prepare and analyze data is necessary (i.e. Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, Word; and the Internet).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work under strict time constraints and deadlines, and to function within a team-oriented work environment.
