About the Unit
Under limited direction of the Assistant Vice President, Campus Planning + Sustainability, the Associate Director for Campus Environment (the Associate Director) serves as a resource to the department and the University community at large. The Associate Director is responsible for the Botanic Garden Initiative, the design of campus landscape and grounds, planning for the care of the campus tree inventory, heritage landscape stewardship, campus lighting, outdoor signage and wayfinding, open space usage policy, and street furniture. The Associate Director supports the public art committee regarding outdoor art placement. The Associate Director proactively identifies projects and works collaboratively to maintain the campus environment at the highest standard.
- Oversees the design and construction of campus landscape/garden projects.
- Makes recommendations to the Office of the President in overseeing the Botanic Garden and other endowed garden annual budgets. Oversees the seasonal plant rotations throughout campus and new garden installations as well as existing garden maintenance.
- Oversees the campus landscape, streetscape, street furniture master planning and design. This includes providing design guidance on major capital construction projects and to the University Medical Center.
- Works with design consultants to develop a landscape that meets the needs of the campus while being maintainable by the landscape maintenance crew with a focus on incorporating sustainable horticultural and water management practices.
- Designs a campus environment with sufficient levels of nighttime illumination to supplement security measures and enhance the overall experience of the campus
- Utilizes and maintains a uniform signage system for campus to convey a sense of place and up-to-date information on wayfinding.
- Ensures the limited use of the automobile within the campus center, and facilitates the use of bicycles.
- Works with various constituencies (academic units, service departments, outside vendors, etc.) to minimize the conflict of pedestrians and vehicles on campus.
- Develops and maintains standards for bike racks, benches, information kiosks, receptacles, fences, etc.
- Manages assigned staff, evaluates their performance, and provides training and development as appropriate.
- Provide leadership and drive progress of consultants to achieve expected functionality, design outcomes and recommend alternatives if needed to keep the project on schedule and within budget.

Education, Experience, or Certifications:
- Landscape Architecture or urban design degree from an accredited institution OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (minimum of twelve years) required.
- Master's degree in landscape architecture, urban design, or urban planning preferred.
- A minimum of ten years' experience in landscape architecture, design, and planning.
- Demonstrated experience in campus landscape planning required.
Licenses and Certifications:
- License in landscape architecture preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Familiarity with current trends in campus landscape architectural projects, sustainability, and campus design.
- High quality visualization skills in 2D and 3D desired.
- Demonstrated management and organizational skills required. In particular, must have previous experience that demonstrates ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities while completing projects on schedule and within budget.
- Ability to direct the work of professionals required.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in and to lead team efforts that balance competing interests required.
- Knowledge of facility project management, engineering and architecture, operations and maintenance required.
- Ability to effectively interact with and convene Departmental staff, as well as campus and university-wide administrators required.
- Utilize principles of management to ensure responsibilities are met effectively and efficiently including planning, controlling, leading, and organizing required.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to provide effective communication within and outside of the department required.
- Ability to effectively interpret University and Departmental policies, procedures and practices required.
- Skill to effectively communicate orally and in writing required.
- Proficiency in MS Project and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) as well as with AutoCAD and Adobe CS or other comparable design software is highly desired.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment of changing priorities required.
