    DESCRIPTION


    The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to serve as Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services in the Law Library. The Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services plays a key role in further developing the Law Library's legal research curriculum, implementing additional teaching partnerships with upper-division courses, and teaching Advanced Legal Research (ALR) classes. Working closely with the Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services, the Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services also participates in the Law Library's outstanding faculty services program, shares in collection development responsibilities, and provides effective user services at the Reference Desk.

    The Research Librarian for Instructional Services takes primary responsibility for developing and managing the Law Library's legal research curriculum, including the required one-credit first-year legal research program, upper-level guest lectures and teaching partnerships, ALR courses, and other training opportunities for law students as part of their learning experience.

    Specific responsibilities include:
    • Develops, coordinates, and implements instructional services as part of the law school curriculum and law student experience. Serves as primary coordinator for the first-year legal research course, including planning the curriculum, designing instructional materials, and leading the librarians teaching different sections of the course. Serves as primary instructor for the upper division ALR course and plans all aspects of the curriculum. Serves as primary presenter in instructional and training programs. Leads tours, orientations, and workshops.

    • Collegially and effectively communicates with other librarians to plan content, activities, staff development, and assessments essential to the Law Library's instructional services program. Collects and analyzes statistics and generates reports on the program.

    • Maintains awareness of and integrates current developments in the fields of law, library science, and legal research into the design and delivery of instructional services, using current and emerging technologies.

    • Serves as a member of the Law Library's Research Services department, providing excellent and responsive general information and legal reference services through regular shifts at the Reference Desk, including some evenings and weekends, as needed.

    • Participates in the Law Library's collection development efforts, including selection, assessment and management of resources.

    • Participates in the Law Library's outstanding faculty services program, including performing legal and interdisciplinary research.

    • Engages actively on Law Library, law school, and campus-wide committees, task forces, project teams, and attends meetings and other functions as appropriate.

    • Participates in and contributes to the profession through professional activities outside the Law Library, including university and public service, and/or research and other creative activity.

    • Other responsibilities as assigned.

    J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution required. Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience is also required.

    Candidates should have experience teaching legal research skills, with a demonstrated awareness of current trends in legal research instruction. Candidates should possess project management skills, including experience in planning, implementing, and leading a project from start to completion.

    Candidates should have demonstrated skills in providing reference services, and extensive knowledge of the legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats.

    Candidates must have outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

    Finally, preferred candidate must possess practice experience as an attorney or professional legal experience; and have the ability to conceptualize and implement processes and programs, both independently and with a team, in a dynamically changing environment.

    Preferred experience preparing legal research course materials and developing assignments, as well as with assessing and selecting collections in law.
