Basic Function

NOVA’s Pathway Connection program is a companion/feeder to the college’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program that provides structured support to students in grades K-12 who demonstrate academic and/or navigational barriers that negatively impact college readiness skills, and community-based college access outreach to underserved populations across Northern Virginia.

Duties and Responsibilities

The College Readiness counselor will provide ongoing support to selected participants on-site at area high schools in Fairfax & Arlington County to improve college readiness skills through an intrusive, case management approach, and engage in college access outreach at pre K-12, early childhood centers and community partner locations. Counseling is conducted using a one-stop, case management format, with timely data tracking and reporting required. Facilitate student and parent workshops on college/career readiness topics, including college financial planning, college placement exam preparation, and student success skills. Support outreach, dual generational & parent programming, including summer programs and college trips & fairs. Collaborate regularly with middle & high schools, college faculty, staff, and administrators to create a seamless support network for participating students. Assist with event planning, program evaluation and participate in campus/college committees and special projects. Position requires 29 hour/week schedule September through mid-June, with option for reduced schedule from late-June through mid-August.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in counseling or related field. Must pass college and school system criminal background checks and provide a negative TB test result taken within the last 24 months.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years full-time experience or its equivalent as a community college or high school counselor. Experience in college readiness, academic planning and career counseling and teaching. Fluent in a foreign language commonly spoken in the Northern Virginia metro area.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of counseling theory, particularly human development, career development and multicultural counseling theory; skill in providing academic, career, and personal counseling to adolescents and youth; skill in conducting outreach to various populations across a large geographic region; skill in effective course instruction, including classroom management, organization and development of course content and multi-modal instructional techniques; skill in written communication, including the development of letters, memos, presentations, and course materials; skill in oral communication, including large and small group presentations and class lectures; skill in case management, including tracking of student caseload and the collection and reporting of data; knowledge of and skill in computer usage, including Microsoft Office, e-mail, PeopleSoft Student Information System, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and use of the internet to complete research; ability to work primarily at off-site locations and travel regularly to various on- and off-campus worksites (including public schools and other NOVA Campuses); ability to collaborate effectively with high school and college personnel, including administrators, counselors, and staff; ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population; ability to work occasional evenings and weekend hours
