Basic Function

Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better people, better workers, and better citizens.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in English or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in English. Candidates are expected to be proficient with computers and have an understanding of instructional technology.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching in the field of Composition and Rhetoric or Writing Studies along with graduate coursework in the field. Master’s specialization or doctoral work in the field of Composition and Rhetoric or Writing Studies. Membership in English professional organization(s). Professional development and/or publishing in the field of Composition and Rhetoric. Experience with Blackboard or another online course management system.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to use technology to enhance instruction; excellent oral/written communication skills; demonstrated teaching skills; experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA
