Job Description
The UNT Dallas College of Law welcomes applications for a full time faculty member who will serve as a Professor of Practice.
This position will: 1) provide direct student supervision in the Frazier Townhomes Community Lawyering Center (CLC); 2) participate in academic instruction related to the clinical program; 3) develop and direct community educational outreach programming; and 4) coordinate and oversee special projects. The CLC provides legal services to qualified low income persons in a variety of areas of civil representation including: general civil law; family law; expungements and orders of non-disclosure; government benefits; probate and estate planning; non-profit and small business advising; housing and eviction appeals; consumer; educational advocacy; and municipal criminal defense.

ABOUT UNT DALLAS COLLEGE OF LAW

The UNT Dallas College of Law is a new public law school whose inaugural class started in Fall 2014. The College of Law currently has, and plans to continue having, one full-time section of approximately 80-90 students, and one part-time evening division of between 40-60 students. For the near-term, each entering class will include a day section and an evening section of approximately these sizes.

The College of Law's goals are: (1) widening access to legal education for those who could be superb legal professionals but who cannot realistically access a legal education given factors including location, cost, and the current role of the LSAT in admission to and financing of law school; (2) providing an educational program focused on excellence in developing practice-related competencies, through a curriculum mapped to those competencies and using best instructional practices, including multiple formative and summative assessment throughout, engaged class design, and a spectrum of experiential education; (3) creating opportunity for our students by keeping tuition and debt low and producing graduates with high value and ability in multiple segments of the market for legal services; (4) becoming a national leader in advancing understanding of best legal education practices, of professional formation, and of the relationship between legal education and the evolving practice and business of law; (5) improving access to justice for underserved legal needs; and (6) serving as a valuable partner in civic engagement with the City of Dallas and the North Texas region.

NATURE OF POSITION AND APPOINTMENT

The faculty appointment will commence in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic term, The actual start date might be advanced to allow for preparation. This is a 12-month position such that the person holding this position will teach in all three semesters - Fall, Spring, Summer.

Under the policies of the UNT Dallas College of Law, a Professor of Practice is an appointment for a fixed term reserved for individuals who have a particular expertise in a given area based on experience and practice. This appointment may be renewed at the sole discretion of the College of Law based on an annual evaluation. Individuals appointed in this position are not eligible for tenure. The initial term of this appointment will be one year. This position is funded under a five-year grant.

EXPECTATIONS

The person holding this appointment will have a role in continuing the development of the College of Law's Community Lawyering Centers, and other experiential education programs and activities. This includes:

• Working with the Director and Assistant Director of Experiential Education and other faculty to: 1) supervise students enrolled in the Community Lawyering Program; 2) assist with development of specialized representation opportunities for enrolled students; 3) assist in the development of community outreach and instructional activities; 4) assist in the continued growth and development of the Community Lawyering Center program; 5) provide instruction as needed in simulation and corresponding classroom courses, including creation of instructional materials; 6) assist in the development of promotional and marketing materials, including social media; and 7) supervise students in client representation as requested by the Director and Assistant Director of Experiential Education.
• Participating in outreach activities to non-profit organizations, neighborhood associations to promote community empowerment, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization with particular emphasis on the Frazier - South Dallas communities.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:
  • J.D. degree.
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or eligible to obtain such a license.
  • In good standing in the bar of licensure.
  • A minimum of five years' active practice of law.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including evening and Saturday hours.
  • Commitment to the goals of the College of Law and its curricular and instructional methods and goals.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Fluent in Spanish, both verbal and written.

Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
