Fort Lewis College invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest in the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The mission, history and aspirations of Fort Lewis College are interwoven with the history and people of southwest Colorado and the Four Corners area. A public regional comprehensive institution grounded in the liberal arts with its own board of trustees, Fort Lewis College plays a critical role in contributing to the state’s economic and cultural vitality by providing excellent post-secondary education to a richly diverse student population. Fort Lewis College is unique among institutions of higher education in its history and commitment to the education of Native American. Its diverse student body hails from 49 states, 173 Native American tribes and Alaska Native villages, and 22 countries. Its faculty is deeply committed to academic excellence and independent, personalized, collaborative, experiential learning.

The Fort Lewis College campus is stunning – a crossroads of education, rich cultures, and adventure, where a uniquely beautiful mountain campus inspires an active and friendly community.  Transformative learning experiences foster entrepreneurship, leadership, creativity, and life-long learning. The 247-acre campus, cited as one of the most beautiful in the US, is situated in southwestern Colorado at 6,872 feet atop a mesa overlooking the Animas River Valley and historic downtown Durango. The next Provost of Fort Lewis College will join the institution at a critical juncture as it lays the groundwork for the next generation of growth and achievement. With the arrival of a new President in summer 2018, the college is developing an inspiring vision that will honor the College’s mission and history while developing innovative solutions to ensure its future. This vision is anchored in serving our students through supportive student success structures, inclusive curricular and co-curricular experiences, and independent learning opportunities that cultivate skills necessary for future professional success as well as serving the region through increased outreach and curricular programing.  

The college seeks a proven, successful leader with a deep understanding of and familiarity with higher education and a record of achievement in leading and managing change in complex organizations. A comprehensive view of how to serve a diverse population of students, contemporary best practices in academic and strategic planning and data-based decision making are also required. Candidates shall have a collaborative and transparent approach to leadership, an established track record of designing and executing high-level initiatives, an interest in Fort Lewis College’s people, the willingness and ability to embrace and embody the mission of the college, and the relationship building and communication skills to connect with Fort Lewis College’s constituents. A Ph.D. is required.
