Assistant Professor - Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology

Job description

The College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications for two faculty positions in the Department of Engineering & Design due to dramatic growth over the past few years; both positions will begin in September 2019. We are looking for an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology (apply to this posting for ME/MET), and Construction Management Technology (see separate posting for CMT). We are also searching for Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology to begin as early as January 2019 to support this growth.

We are seeking broadly trained candidates who will be inspirational teachers, role models, and mentors who complement the strengths of our faculty to engage in instructionally-intensive undergraduate programs including distance teaching. EWU is one of the most culturally and economically diverse universities in the state of Washington and recently won a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. Approximately one-third of the students are multicultural and half are first generation to college. A demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public is desired. Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching.

The successful candidate for the Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology will have earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field by the appointment date and preferably have at least one year of teaching experience. Candidates with expertise in advanced manufacturing technology including robotics are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must have a strong interest in teaching undergraduate Engineering courses, excellent communication skills to meet the needs of our diverse student body, demonstrated ability to publish work in the technical literature, and the desire to pursue external funding. Significant successful prior college teaching experience, professional licensure, and relevant industrial experience are preferred.

Primary areas of responsibility include teaching undergraduate mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology courses (including some taken by our BS Technology students), scholarly activity/industrial outreach, curriculum development, and professional service. All faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning in these ABET accredited programs.

These positions are open until further notice; screening for the Assistant Professor positions will begin January 15, 2019. To be assured full consideration, your application must be submitted by that date. Submit your application materials through our online faculty application portal located here: https://jobs.hr.ewu.edu. If you are unable to submit through the applicant portal, please contact Human Resource Services at (509) 359-2381.

All submissions must include a letter of application that addresses each of the key responsibilities and qualifications of the position (both required and preferred) including how you will work with the culturally diverse student, faculty, and staff at EWU; curriculum vitae; a list of three professional references with addresses, email, and phone numbers; a statement of your teaching philosophy; and a description of proposed scholarly activity and industrial outreach program. You will also be asked to complete a short candidate profile form as part of the online process.
