About the Unit
The Division of the Biological Sciences (BSD) is the largest operating unit of the University of Chicago. It includes the Pritzker School of Medicine, approximately 20 academic units, degree-granting committees, and research centers and institutes. BSD is located on the University's main campus in Hyde Park, ten minutes south of downtown Chicago. BSD's patient care operations are conducted primarily at the University of Chicago Hospital and clinics, which share the same campus.

Job Summary:

We seek an Associate Director for Sponsored Research Initiatives for the new Duchossois Family Institute (DFI) at the University of Chicago. The DFI seeks to accelerate research and interventions based on how the human immune system, microbiome and genetics interact to maintain health. A large focus of the DFI is on advancing scientific discovery through building a vibrant research and innovation community as part of a DFI Research Incubator. This individual would be an integral part of the DFI research community, providing project management, and scientific writing and editing of faculty-driven grant proposals. The individual would interact with the DFI Director, Incubator Director, Research Platform Directors, DFI faculty and trainees, and with staff from the Polsky Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in developing proposals. The successful candidate will be able to work closely with faculty to help translate early ideas and concepts into competitive proposals. Continued employment will be contingent upon satisfactory job performance and availability of funding.


  • Develop detailed knowledge of the mission areas of the DFI as well as DFI-affiliated faculty research interests and strengths.
  • Identify appropriate funding opportunities (federal and nonfederal) that align with the mission of the DFI.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with DFI faculty and staff to help identify scientific synergies.
  • Work with faculty, Platform Directors, and pre-award staff to iterate proposal drafts and finalize proposal submissions.
  • Work with faculty in writing and editing the proposals to ensure that the most competitive proposals are put forward.
  • Provide project management in organizing team science proposals to meet proposal expectations and make efficient use of faculty and staff time.
  • Work with pre-award staff and University Research Administration to ensure compliance with university policies.
  • Participate in scientific discussions and brainstorming regarding experimental design, and new technological development and innovation around research themes supported by the DFI.
  • Participate in regular scientific meetings of the DFI.
  • Write and edit a variety of science-related materials and communications as needed for the DFI.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Advanced degree in relevant scientific area preferred

  • Experience with federal grants and an academic background in the biological sciences strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of writing and editing experience required, preferably in an academic or scientific journal setting.
  • Professional experience in a higher education setting preferred.
