The successful candidate will lead or participate the experimental research on the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX) and other experimental facilities under Max-Planck Princeton Center for Plasma Physics (MPPC). The primary subject is magnetic reconnection and related phenomena. The candidate will closely collaborate with participating groups within MPPC and also broadly other groups beyond MPPC.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a postdoctoral research physicist position at Laboratory Astrophysics Division in Plasma Science & Technology Department. Working with other personnel and graduate students, the candidate will lead or participate experimental campaigns to investigate mechanisms of fast magnetic reconnection and the associated physical processes in MRX and other facilities under MPPC, such as particle heating and acceleration. Close collaborations and interactions within the Max-Planck center are required. Candidates must have an extensive background in experimental physics, preferably plasma physics. The major responsibilities include initiating experimental campaigns, designing and implementing diagnostics, performing experiments, analyzing data, interpreting results, performing and analyzing supporting numerical simulations, presenting and publishing results jointly with other researchers. Coordinating activity with other technical, engineering and administrative personnel is also essential. Development of new ideas should help grow the area of laboratory plasma astrophysics at PPPL in the long term. Depending on qualifications and other contributing factors, a more senior position for a staff research physicist can be considered.
Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or related physics, with preference given to applicants with experience in plasma experiments and their diagnostics, data acquisition, data processing, and applications to heliophysics and astrophysics.
