About the Unit
The Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME), established in 2011 by the University of Chicago in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, is a transformational academic unit exploring the intersection of science and engineering. IME explores innovative technologies that address fundamental societal problems through advances in nanoscale manipulation and design on a molecular scale. IME is the largest new academic program that the University has started since 1988.

Job Summary:

The Research Specialist 2 will work collaboratively with a principal investigator on varied research projects in the Institute for Molecular Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning, development and execution of research in the laboratory
  • Assist in organizing and managing the laboratory
  • Participate in writing reports and manuscripts
  • Assist in management of animal colony and animal experiments
  • Conduct periodic training for current and new members of the laboratory
  • Contribute and sometimes leads, the writing of academic papers, reports and final summaries
  • Collect, records, and analyzes data
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates
  • May serve as a lead research specialist on a research project
  • Present research findings at staff meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences
  • Other related tasks as required

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in field relevant to the research (e.g., biology, cell biology, cancer biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, biophysics) required.
  • Advanced degree in field relevant to the research (e.g., biology, cell biology, cancer biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, biophysics) strongly preferred.


Experience:
  • Minimum two years relevant research experience required.
  • Experience in Molecular Biology techniques (i.e. quantitative real-time PCR, RNA and DNA isolation, transfection, infection, transformation, cloning) required.
  • Experience Biochemical techniques (i.e. affinity chromatography, immunoblots) required.
  • Experience in Tissue Culture techniques (i.e. ex vivo cultures, primary cell isolation, transfection, infection, co-culture) required.
  • Experience in Cell assays (i.e. cell signaling, proliferation, adhesion, migration, invasion, proliferation, apoptosis, cytotoxicity) required.
  • Experience in Microscopy (i.e. immunofluorescent analysis, immunohistochemical analysis) preferred.
  • Experience in Mouse in vivo models of cancer metastasis (i.e. intraperitoneal injections and dissections) preferred
  • Experience in transgenic mouse models (i.e. breeding and genotyping) preferred.
  • Familiarity with common computer programs and standard laboratory equipment preferred.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Knowledge or cancer biology and role of microenvironment during cancer progression.
  • Knowledge of research techniques or methods (cell biology, transcription, primary cultures, microscopy, cell assays, biochemical assays, molecular biology assays).
