FACULTY, Department of Global Health, Boston University School of Public Health
2059/J0218

The Department of Global Health (DGH) at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) is recruiting for a faculty position with expertise in health system economics, health economics modeling, and/or health economic impact evaluation in low or middle-income countries. We are seeking a versatile analyst with field experience, strong quantitative skills, and prior work in global public health. Areas of focus may include the design and evaluation of health system interventions, cost-effectiveness analysis and resource allocation, mathematical modeling to improve resource utilization, or the application of behavioral economic methods.

DGH believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. We are eager to have join our ranks a colleague who supports our institutional commitment to ensuring Boston University (BU) is inclusive, equitable, and diverse and a place where all constituents can thrive. BU is an Association of American Universities (AAU) institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud that we were the first American university to award a PhD to a woman and we continue that tradition of educating a diverse and talented student body. BUSPH takes the University’s commitment even further with its own detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community. BUSPH actively seeks to enrich its student and faculty ranks, recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor. We seek to embed—within our curricular and co-curricular activities—the principle that pluralism within a learning community is a source of insight and effectiveness.

The successful candidate will join DGH’s dynamic research programs in the economics and epidemiology of HIV, infectious diseases, maternal and child health, health systems, and access to medicines in low- and middle- income countries, and will have access to BU’s world class computing facilities and faculty expertise. DGH is comprised of 30 full and part-time faculty who are internationally recognized for their innovation in research, scholarship, and teaching. The Department collaborates with international colleagues in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Central Europe.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead an independent research agenda in line with departmental priorities, actively engage in collaborative research, participate in teaching and mentoring master’s and doctoral students, and provide service to the department, university, and profession. Applications are welcome at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor level. Successful candidates will have strong potential (Assistant) or demonstrated track record (Associate/Full) of conducting global health field research, publishing in top journals, and securing external research funding.

Requirements at the Assistant, Associate, and full Professor levels:

  • Doctoral degree in relevant quantitative field (health economics, health systems, public health, public policy)
  • Experience with quantitative methods for impact evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis
  • Experience with primary data collection or other global health fieldwork
  • Ongoing relationships with investigators and/or research organizations in project countries
  • Demonstrated leadership potential, resourcefulness, and intellectual creativity

Additional requirements at the Assistant Professor level:

  • At least two peer-reviewed publications with major contribution (e.g. first, second, or senior authorship)
  • Demonstrated potential to secure grant funding (e.g. receipt of institutional grants or fellowships)

Additional requirements at the Associate and full Professor levels:

  • Multiple peer-reviewed publications on health economics in low- and middle-income countries
  • Demonstrated track record of securing substantial external grant funding for research
  • Current appointment at the assistant professor level or higher

To apply: Please submit the following via AcademicJobsOnline:

  • Academic CV;
  • Cover letter outlining research and teaching interests and qualifications, and how, through research and teaching, you will contribute to our goals to engender a more inclusive and diverse school;
  • Representative publication or job market paper; and
  • Names, affiliations, and contact information of three references from whom we should expect letters. Applicants should ask each referee to send the letters via AcademicJobsOnline.

Application review will begin in late autumn 2018, with interviews in early 2019. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
