As part of a university-wide cluster initiative in cybersecurity studies, the Department of Media Studies (http://www.mediastudies.virginia.edu) at the University of Virginia seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with an appointment to begin August 25, 2019. Faculty serving as part of this cluster will engage in funded research, teach, and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and perform service for the cluster and the university. The successful candidate must have a PhD at time of appointment, show evidence of effective teaching and have an excellent research record in the field of digital media studies. The research specialization for this position is "social media and society," with preferred emphases on surveillance, security, computational propaganda, and political movements around the world. Candidates should be well versed in theories and methods that would complement current departmental strengths in technology and policy and should be familiar with the fields of Computer Science and Data Science.
