Position Description - The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science at Lehigh University is seeking a multi-disciplinary post-doctoral scientist with experience in process-based hydrologic modeling and/or agent-based modeling (ABM) to work on research projects related to water-food-energy-environment nexus at watershed and regional scales. As part of a multi-disciplinary team of water scientists and engineers, the selected candidate is expected to participate in the development of an integrated complex distributed water systems model and apply it to understand effects of variations in the hydrologic cycle and climate change on coupled human-natural systems.
Duration This is a one-year position (starting salary as $55,000 with benefit) with the possibility of extension for following years depends on work performance and available funding. The position is immediately available and with a flexible start date before 2019/06/01.
Minimum Qualifications • Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Geography, Computer Science or similar fields; • Coding experience in Python, R, Matlab, or C++;
Preferred Qualifications • Research experience in developing and applying hydrologic models in water resources, including knowledge of optimization and water resources system analysis; • Experience with RiverWare or any ABM software (e.g. NetLogo) is a major plus; • Experience conducting original research and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals; Major Duties
1. Running an agent-based model that coupled with a river-reservoir routing model: RiverWare to simulate influences of human decisions at watershed level regarding energy-water nexus;
2. Developing an agent-based model that coupled with RiverWare to simulate influences of human decisions at regional level regarding energy-water nexus. This study area will be the Colorado River and the RiverWare software will be Colorado River Simulation System (CRSS);
3. Participating in other research work in the Complex Adaptive Water System (CAWS) research group, located at Lehigh University
About Lehigh University For 150 years, Lehigh University has combined outstanding academic and learning opportunities with leadership in fostering innovative research. The institution is among the nation's most selective, highly ranked private research universities. Lehigh’s four colleges provide graduate and undergraduate education to approximately 7,000 students. Located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Lehigh is 80 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia, providing an accessible and convenient location that offers an appealing mix of urban and rural lifestyles. The Lehigh Valley International Airport is just six miles from campus. Lehigh Valley cities and towns are regularly listed as among the best places to live in the country. Lehigh’s CEE Department is consistently ranked among the top 25 nationally. The CEE Water Resources Laboratory has a flow capacity of 6 cfs and has 2 modeling tanks (12' x 30' and 10' x 20', respectively), a 50' horizontal flume, several short tilting flumes, and experimental benches. The Water and Environmental Engineering research laboratories are located in the state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Environment, Policy and Society (STEPS) research facility (http://www.lehigh.edu/steps). STEPS is also home to the Energy Systems Engineering Institute (http://www.lehigh.edu/~inesei/) and Environmental Initiative (EI) (http://www.ei.lehigh.edu). The EI is an interdisciplinary program consisting of faculty, staff and students from all four colleges of Lehigh whose overall mission is to advance humanity's understanding and awareness of our role in an interaction with our natural environment through research, teaching, and outreach. The EI enables interdisciplinary efforts that transcend typical departmental and college boundaries in degree programs, problem-based research projects, and environmental education for school children, policymakers, and the general public.
