About the Unit
The Polsky Center brings the power of ideas in the laboratory, classroom and community to the world. Through education, resources, and programs, the Polsky Center commercializes discoveries, partners with companies, and attracts venture capital. The Polsky Center runs a top-ranked business accelerator, the Edward L. Kaplan, '71, New Venture Challenge and operates a 34,000 square-foot, multi-disciplinary co-working space called the Polsky Exchange; an innovation fund, the George Shultz Innovation Fund, that invests in early-stage ventures; and a state-of-the-art Fabrication Lab for prototyping new products. Finally, the Polsky Center manages the University of Chicago's technology transfer function that manages all University-based intellectual property originating from faculty research and discoveries, which can be licensed to industry partners and investors. In addition to providing venture creation support for all members of the University of Chicago community, the Polsky Center also has a community-facing mission to supporting local South and West Side community entrepreneurs with no formal connection to the University. By igniting a spirit of innovation and fostering connections that extend across the University, city, region and world, the Polsky Center enables more ideas to have a meaningful impact on society. About the Fab Lab: The Polsky Exchange's Fab Lab is a state-of-the-art space for digital fabrication and rapid prototyping. It includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, CNC routers, and other tools and software for turning ideas into physical objects.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The Polsky Fab Lab internship is intended to introduce the process of digital fabrication for prototyping physical products, and to help the intern connect with the larger Chicago making and fabrication community. The internship will be 19 hours per week for six months (January through June 2019). The internship may involve some evening and Saturday hours.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Fab Lab
  • Work with Polsky Exchange members to understand their prototyping needs and mentor them through the design process
  • Assist with and teach user training classes and demonstration

  • Strong interest in digital fabrication and prototyping
  • Excellent in-person and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong curiosity and creativity; eagerness to learn by doing and learn from failure
  • Attention to detail, strong initiative, professional demeanor
  • Eagerness to participate in Polsky Exchange workshops and community
  • Curiosity about startups and entrepreneurships
  • Create work using Fab Lab equipment to provide examples of process and results
  • Attend Polsky and ecosystem events
