Job Summary:

The Director of Equity and Impact is a newly established position, responsible for leading internal (to NCS) and external (with schools and partners) equity work, as well as spreading impactful practices from the R&D network throughout the city and nationally. With a concentration on NCS' first guiding principle, “challenging leaders to create the conditions to interrupt inequities in schools and districts is vital to transforming schools,” the Director of Equity and Impact will lead the organization's efforts to train, develop, and measure our staff's capacity to engage in racial equity work in education. The impact side of this position will work with our program teams, partners, and external evaluators to spread successful practices from the R&D network to all Chicago public high schools and to the nation. Through the development of resources and relationships, the Director of Equity and Impact will interrogate the frameworks, tools, and best practices we use in order to better integrate measurement and evaluation into the design process. This position requires a person who is self-directed, an active problem-solver, who is always seeking out the right resources and information to answer complex questions with equity, race, transformation, and impact consistently at the forefront.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead NCS's national work:
    • Plan and lead the successful implementation of the National Freshmen Success Institute (NFSI).
      • Continue to develop the NFSI curriculum and supports.
      • Lead the NFSI team.
    • Lead NCS's consulting practice with districts, schools, and intermediary organizations.
      • Develop consultation model, consultant curriculum, rubrics, and growth plan.
      • Develop the criteria by which NCS will decide whether to pursue opportunities.
    • Support high-quality design and implementation of the Chicago-wide High School Institute in collaboration the Impact Manager and the To&Through project.
    • Lead Equity-Based-Professional Learning Community year one and transition to new program for teachers that involves mirror and outward facing work.
    • In these four areas of work (NFSI, consultation, High School Institute, EB-PLC):
      • Use meaningful and useful data disaggregation to support school professionals to engage in critical analysis of successes and areas of needed improvement.
      • Provide the professional learning and theoretical frameworks to support a solutions-based response to the data.
  • Strengthen a virtuous cycle of learning, practice, and reflection at the citywide and national levels, bringing learning from citywide and national work back to the R&D team.
  • Support tool and framework development, in collaboration with the communications team.
  • Lead the successful implementation of the Building Equitable Learning Environments' pilot of the Transformational Learning Lab.
    • Lead the effort to bring a community of teachers towards a transformation of their practices and results through cycles of self-reflection and action.
    • Maintain positive relationships with Raikes Foundation staff.
  • Improves organizational success in all staff functions through the lens of diversity, inclusion, and equity by implementing best practices, appropriate evaluation processes, and measuring organizational benchmarks.
  • Assess and make recommendations to the Leadership Team concerning internal equity and external equity work.
  • Lead NCS's efforts to engage in personal/professional and organizational self-reflection, examination of identity and role in systems of oppression, and to boldly challenge inequities both within the organization and in partnerships.
  • Craft measurement frameworks that can be used for impact evaluations of our programs directly connected to equity (both internally and externally).
  • Year 1: Build the capacity of R&D staff to lead the Freshman Success work.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

Education:
  • Master's degree in education, or related field required.


Experience:
  • Seven years teaching experience at the middle or high school level required.
  • Experience leading equity work required.
  • Experience developing frameworks to frame and drive work required.
  • A relentless commitment to public education, social justice, and equitable outcomes for all students required.
  • A commitment to self-reflection, examination of identity and role in systems of oppression and to challenging inequities required.
  • Availability to travel within Chicago metropolitan area, Illinois, and outside of the state required.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Knowledge of word processing, presentation (PPT), and spreadsheet software.
  • Excellent data-gathering, problem-solving, and consensus-building skills.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Daily access to a reliable car.
