Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Previous custodian lead or supervisor experience is preferred.

Highly qualified applicants will possess:

Knowledge of supervisory functions such as recommend transfer, suspension, promotion, discharge, assignment, evaluation, discipline and adjustment of grievances.

Ability to develop and conduct training of custodians and performance and development reviews.

Knowledge of administrative responsibilities such as developing and implementing procedures, schedules and priorities of work; investigating and keeping reports of accidents, thefts, vandalism; developing and implementing inspection, data, forms, and techniques; develop staffing patterns and levels and correct practices.

Ability to manage a daily account of employee attendance and employee personnel reports of performance and/or disciplinary problems.

Ability to inspect buildings to maintain high standards of quality.



License or certificate:

Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver's license which meets the UW Risk Management Standards.



Position Summary:

This highly responsible supervisory housekeeping position has 24-hour responsibility for the custodial operations in assigned campus buildings. Work involves the direct supervision of 20 to 30 Custodians and the responsibility for cleaning in excess of 500,000 square feet of campus classrooms, offices, laboratories, auditoriums, and hallways. This position is also responsible for managing an annual budget (labor, supplies and equipment) of approximately $450,000.

Duties include:
Making work assignments
Managing supplies and equipment
Training employees
Evaluating performance
Planning, assigning and directing a wide variety of cleaning activities in response to cleaning needs and customer expectations.

This position reports to a Custodial Services Program Supervisor. Work is performed under general supervision.

Additional Information:

This work requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lb.), bending, stretching, climbing, pushing, twisting, pulling, and reaching.

Must be willing and able to work in animal laboratory facilities. Direct contact with animals is not required, but special procedures are necessary when working in buildings used for research animals. In the event you are required to work in or around animal facilities, you will be enrolled in the appropriate medical surveillance program.

Some positions require the ability to take and pass tuberculin tests every six months or more frequently.

Some positions require the ability to take and pass a fingerprint test.

Must be willing to work outside of normal working hours. This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal work shift.


This position requires a conviction record check. Because of the nature of this position, applicants will be asked to furnish a signed written record of any conviction or pending criminal charges.

Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) will require Post-Offer Pre-Employment screenings on all selected candidates.



KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Basic knowledge of civil service employment process, state and federal guidelines on equal employment opportunities and affirmative action.

Basic knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.

Basic knowledge of proper procedures for administering corrective discipline.

Knowledge of union contracts and grievance procedure.

Knowledge of proper cleaning methods and procedures.

Ability to evaluate a job and develop realistic estimates of time and materials required for completion of the task.

Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, their proper use, and safety precautions.

Knowledge of various floor finishes, their proper application and use.

Knowledge of correct operating procedures and safety precautions for power equipment used in floor care (i.e. floor scrubbers, automatic floor cleaner, water vacuums, and vacuum cleaners).

Ability to perform all tasks and operate all power equipment used in custodial operations.
Knowledge of proper techniques to be used for training new employees, i.e., Job Instruction Training (JIT).

Ability to evaluate performance of subordinates, counsel and assist them in improving job knowledge and skills.

Ability to evaluate new products and equipment.

Knowledge of common supplies and materials kept in inventory.

Knowledge of departmental purchasing/requisitioning procedures.

Knowledge of policies and procedures for maintaining time/attendance records.

Knowledge of provisions of labor agreements on wages, hours worked, premium pay, use of sick leave and vacation.

Knowledge of the provisions of the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act).

Knowledge of procedures for accident reporting, handling disciplinary actions, etc.

Knowledge of MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) content and use.

Ability to write clear and concise reports.

Ability to maintain a professional and service oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.

Knowledge of electronic mail, word processing, and various maintenance/quality assurance programs.

Present a neat and clean appearance at all times.
