Job Description

One major program of the Mays Center for Experiential Learning & Community Engagement (Mays Center) is the Academic Service-Learning Program, which offers a variety of classes in multiple disciplines, for traditional undergraduate, graduate, non-traditional, and online students. Academic service-learning is a structured part of a course that offers experiential learning and is intentionally connected to a course's learning objectives. The Service-Learning Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and logistical support of multiple details related to each service-learning class as it relates to the faculty member, students, and community partners. The Coordinator also explores and refines community partner relationships for various work conducted with the Mays Center.

This position typically works Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. May work beyond normal office hours to include evenings, weekends, and peak times.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists faculty in designing, implementing, and evaluating service-learning courses; provides logistical support to service-learning faculty and serves as the liaison with community partners.
  • Provides a service-learning orientation to students in service-learning classes; advises students about professional etiquette and appropriate ways to interact with the community.
  • Provides support to students enrolled in service-learning classes; monitors their progress towards project completion.
  • Establishes and maintains positive communication with faculty, students, and community partners to explore and develop opportunities to incorporate service-learning into the curriculum; helps troubleshoot site or student issues as they arise.
  • Coordinates the writing of Service-Learning Mutual Expectations Agreement between the Mays Center, faculty member, and community partner.
  • Develops, updates, distributes and collects all relevant service-learning paperwork, including but not limited to criminal background check forms, risk management forms, and Mutual Expectations Agreements.
  • Assesses and documents program effectiveness through faculty, student, and agency evaluations; prepares reports on service-learning activities.
  • Addresses safety and risk management measures appropriate to the program.
  • Conducts and protects confidentiality of criminal background checks on students participating in service-learning; locates alternative options for those students failing checks; monitors status of student clearance for checks conducted by partnering agencies.
  • Provides similar coordination and logistical support for additional experiential learning courses, as outlined above.
  • Identifies and selects new community organizations; updates and maintains the Mays Center community partner database.
  • Coordinate various events, activities, and fairs on topics related to service-learning, career planning, and other experiential learning opportunities.
  • Successfully represent the Mays Center in the office, in the classroom, and in the community with a strong professional presence. This position will be a liaison to faculty and departments at A&M-SA University to support experiential education and is responsible to stay up-to-date on research and current trends in experiential education and career related resources.
  • Confer with and assist the Director of Experiential Learning in the performance of program administration and activities. Assists in preparing program budgets, annual reports, and managing and monitoring expenditures. Evaluates effectiveness of programs and recommends improvements or changes.
  • Assists in the preparation of informational and promotional materials for use in outreach activities for the Mays Center.
  • Represents the University at the San Antonio Volunteer Administrators (SAVA) and Service-Learning Intercollegiate Collaborative (SLIC) meetings.
  • Assists the Civic Engagement Coordinator in conducting large-scale days of service.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality.
  • Manage student workers to accomplish tasks.

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field and three years of related experience.


Preferred Education & Experience:
  • Master's degree in applicable field.
  • Three years of experience in higher education. Experience in the coordination of service-learning activities. A working knowledge of risk management issues. Community relations experience, particularly in San Antonio.


KSAs
  • Must have the ability to effectively interact with faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrators, and community partners.
  • Experience in developing and facilitating workshops; developing and delivering presentations, and exhibiting excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to organize and work independently as a leader and as part of a team and a strong commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications.
