Position Overview

Provide for campus safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed. Cooperate with other law enforcement officials.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Effectively apply police powers in the enforcement of all Federal and State laws, City of Edmond Ordinances, and University Policies. Maintains a professional, service-oriented relationship with the general public and other area public safety providers. Effectively apply departmental rules and statutory provisions related to the use of deadly force, operation of an emergency police vehicle or any other vehicle owned by the University of Central Oklahoma. Serves in the capacity of an Edmond police officer pursuant to the current jurisdictional agreement. Conduct moderately complex investigations into criminal activity and traffic accidents in addition to routine service and security functions. In the absence of the shift sergeant, provides supervision of Student Public Safety Officer(s). Deal effectively with requests for police services, emergency or non-emergency in nature. Required to cross-train in the Communications Center, as well as train in other areas of service responsibility that fall under the Public Safety umbrella of responsibility, as assigned. Speaks to groups and individuals about campus public safety issues inclusive of creating and giving presentations on a specific public safety-related topics as may be assigned based on experience and ability. Utilize knowledge, education, and training to reasonably bring an incident to a positive conclusion. Requires being able to work any hours of the day or night, and any day of the week, inclusive of Holidays and weekends, and requires, at times working additional overtime hours. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Must have no less than sixty (60) credit hours of college course work (four year degree from an accredited University or College preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver's License. Must within six months of employment, complete and thereafter shall maintain in good standing, a diploma of certification as a Peace Officer from the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. Must successfully pass a written examination, review by an oral board, physical examination, polygraph examination, extensive background investigation, MMPI, and physical agility test. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.

Portrays to the public a calm demeanor during normal and highly stressful situations of interaction. Expresses ideas clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to interact with various levels within or outside the University to provide service, interpret and explain ideas and concepts, as well as resolve issues., Maintains a working knowledge of policies and procedures, generally accepted principles, and methods. Resolves day to day operational issues by collecting and interpreting information. Solutions may include modifying procedures and methods to address new conditions and may incorporate advice and input as needed from supervisor. Judgment and Decision Making - Ability to make independent, complex decisions simultaneously exercising personal initiative and good judgment Social Perceptiveness - Demonstrates good human relation skills to establish and foster good relationships with subordinates, university employees, and students. Must have a service attitude. Critical thinking, and ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Learning - Proficient use of personal computer and Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to learn and utilize the university software program and systems in the performance of regular duties. Integrity - Job requires being honest and ethical.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
