The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine located in Memphis, TN. UTHSC seeks an accomplished leader to advance the research, teaching, and service missions for the Department. In addition to leading the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Chair will be involved in developing the research and education enterprise throughout the UTHSC College of Medicine.
Department of Preventive Medicine
As of 2018, the Department has 30 faculty, 8 fellows, and 8 – 10 support staff. In addition, there are currently searches for 5 additional faculty hires at various stages of progression. The Department supports an investigator-driven research portfolio of over $27 million from federal, foundation, and private sources. The Department provides a leadership role in the Tennessee Clinical and Translational Science Institute (TN-CTSI) to address health inequities in the Southern United States and has unique capacity for research surrounding health disparities, social determinants of health, and health needs of disadvantaged populations.
The Department plays a critical role in advancing the University’s educational mission by teaching in the undergraduate medical school curriculum, offering a M.S. in Epidemiology, and offering a certificate in clinical research. Its faculty are involved in a wide range of ongoing studies in areas such as preventive medicine, behavioral psychology, health service research, informatics, biostatistics, health economics, public health, medical anthropology, epidemiology, health promotion, exercise physiology, and nutrition. Preventive Medicine faculty and staff provide service within the University and to the greater Memphis community and provide significant statistics and methodology consulting.
College of Medicine
The College of Medicine offers programs leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and Physician Assistant (PA) certification. The College of Medicine also participates in the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) combined degree program as well as provides active participation in the programs offered by the College of Graduate Health Sciences (M.S., Ph.D). The College of Medicine also provides extensive training in Graduate Medical Education (GME). Four fully integrated locations - Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville - constitute the UTHSC College of Medicine.
Medical students from the College of Medicine spend their first two years on the Memphis Campus and can then rotate on any of the four campuses for clinical training. PA students spend their first year at UTHSC Memphis, and their second year at clinical training sites throughout Tennessee. GME programs, active research, and clinical practice programs are present on all four College of Medicine campuses. Currently, the COM has approximately 656 medical students and over 1100 residents and fellows in 84 GME training programs. Gross revenues for the COM exceed $400M annually with greater than $70 million in research revenues. Multiple physician practice groups make up the COM faculty practice arm with the largest number of faculty being members of University Clinical Health (UCH).
Qualifications and Characteristics
The Chair must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree with a distinguished record of accomplishment. In addition, it is preferred, the Chair possesses:
- Ability to strengthen, identify, and provide strategic and visionary leadership in the fulfillment of the Department’s mission and vision
- Vision and skills to foster continued growth of the academic enterprise surrounding research and scholarship
- A track record of funded research in an area related to the Department’s research such as epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, community participatory research, health services and policy, and health behaviors
- Strong mentorship experience and proven ability to grow and develop others
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity and equal opportunity
- Ability to recognize, develop, and retain talented faculty and staff
- Strong communication skills and an ability to encourage open dialogue
- Financial acumen with experience in managing and stewarding resources
- A track record of interprofessional collaboration and the ability to collaboratively work with other academic units across campus

Salary is commensurate with experience and a competitive start up package is expected.
