The Heller School for Social Policy and Management invites applications and nominations for one or more faculty position(s) in Behavioral Health. We seek a recognized scholar(s) whose research and teaching apply to issues of behavioral health and behavioral health policy with expertise in addiction prevention and treatment. In particular, we seek candidates with a strong interest in applied research and generating knowledge to inform public policy at the state and federal level regarding the opioid crisis. The position carries an appointment outside the tenure structure at the rank of professor or associate professor, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications. Alternatively, a position as professor or associate professor of practice could be considered.

The candidate(s) selected for this position(s) will carry on our tradition of excellence in behavioral health services and policy research, and public engagement. The position is based in the Institute for Behavioral Health (IBH). The selected individual is expected to be an active participant in the leadership and management of the IBH Opioid Policy Research Collaborative (OPRC). The candidate will play a leading role in expanding its research portfolio. The faculty candidate is expected to raise a substantial portion of salary coverage through grants and contracts, although one-quarter of one position is supported through the school for senior managerial and leadership responsibilities of the OPRC. Additional coverage may be offered through teaching at the undergrad, masters, or doctoral levels, depending on availability and interest.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Scholarship. Play a lead role in expanding the Heller School’s research portfolio in opioid addiction through directing research projects, working collaboratively to conceptualize new areas of applied research and practice, and disseminating scholarship through publication in peer review journals and other scholarly and policy outlets.
• Strategic Leadership. Join an active leadership team, contributing intellectual and strategic guidance to help sustain and grow services and policy research focused on opioid addiction. Design and implement strategies for raising research funding to support the scholarly and educational mission. Work with the OPRC Advisory Committee to advance the mission of the OPRC.
• Management. Contribute to the management of the OPRC. Facilitate a collegial, team-oriented and creative environment that supports both existing research and the development of new ideas, mentoring of junior colleagues, and publicizes our research in the opioid area.
• Teaching. Advise PhD and Master’s students in the behavioral health concentration. Serve on PhD dissertation committees. Teach as appropriate and as courses are available in Heller’s graduate programs.
• Policy Influence. Conduct public engagement. This could include participation in activities related to addiction research and policy through any number of venues including sitting on national committees, working closely with public agencies on policy and programs, or testifying before Congress.

Job Criteria:
Candidates should:

• Have a doctorate or other terminal degree in the social sciences, public health or other relevant discipline with experience researching responses to the opioid crisis.
• Have a scholarly understanding of behavioral health, opioid prescribing practices and the systems and organizations providing addiction prevention and treatment services.
• Have an active program of externally-funded research that will contribute to advancing the well-being of people with opioid use disorder.
• Demonstrate a successful record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and other scholarly and policy outlets.
• Be able to contribute to the strategic direction of IBH and its OPRC.

THE INSTITUTE FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
IBH is the largest of three institutes housed in the Schneider Institutes for Health Policy within the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. IBH aims to study and shape the structure of the prevention, treatment delivery, and payment systems by conducting research and informing policymakers and other stakeholders.
