General Summary

The Psychology Department invites applications for the administrative position of Department Head, projected to start July 1, 2019.

The Psychology Department is large and vibrant, comprised of 26tenure track faculty, several lecturers, adjuncts and staff, about 100 graduate students, and 900 undergraduate majors. In 2011, EMU completed our state-of-the-art science complex that includes the Psychology Department. The science complex includes a vivarium that serves the campus animal research needs, as well as specialized laboratories that support our multidisciplinary undergraduate neuroscience program. Opportunities exist for faculty to collaborate with partners at nearby major research universities and hospitals. Considered a leader on campus, Psychology offers an undergraduate major, three terminal M.S. programs (General Clinical; Clinical Behavioral: Experimental), and the institution's first Ph.D. program. The Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program began in 2001, received full APA accreditation in 2005, and it now supports over 40 doctoral students. The program was re-accredited for 10 years in 2017, and it operates a psychology training clinic that serves the local community; construction is underway to move the training clinic to a new health center on campus in 2019. The Department collaborates with EMU's multidisciplinary autism training center and is part of a new interdisciplinary neuroscience program that launched in fall 2016. At the undergraduate level, we also offer a minor in human sexuality and a concentration that provides students with courses and practicum experiences to be eligible for the Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) credential; at the graduate level, programming can prepare students for the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Aligning departmental goals with college and university goals;

Leadership in the development of new initiatives and programs and revision of existing ones;

Evaluation of faculty performance for tenure, promotion and supplemental salary adjustments;

Planning/scheduling departmental course offerings;

Recruiting/interviewing prospective faculty;

Advising/assisting the Dean in program and policy development;

Administering/managing department resources;

Participating in local, national, professional, and governmental associations and agencies to continue personal academic development and promote the University.

Teaching one course or equivalent per semester is expected.

Prepare and monitor departmental budget for personnel services, supplies, maintenance and equipment and other grants and contracts.

Support students and faculty regarding such matters as curricular requirements, transfer of courses, availability of classes and academic problems and/or grievances.

Administer collective bargaining master agreements.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Psychology or closely related discipline, minimum of 5 years of university-level teaching, and credentials appropriate to appointment as Full Professor.

We seek an individual with demonstrated administrative and leadership skills commensurate with the demands of working in a public institution embedded in a collective bargaining environment.

Leadership experience in a department that has included both graduate and undergraduate programs is preferred.

Leadership expectations include administering and directing the developmental, personnel, financial and operational activities of the department in collaboration with faculty.

Leadership in grant and research development, fundraising and alumni relations, fostering professional growth, and representing the Department to external constituencies are desirable.

Expertise in research is desirable for leadership purposes, but the applicant is not expected to focus heavily on their own program of research.
