Occupational Summary: Funding for 3 years

The Program Director, Strategic Research Initiatives (PD) will be the administrative leader and partner for the TDH-CV faculty physician convener and will participate on the leadership team of TDH-CV. The AD will oversee overall operations, research portfolio management and opportunity assessments for TDH-CV. Provide administrative and programmatic direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation and administration of the initiative's strategic planning and subsequent short and long term policies, procedures and program plans.

The PD will work in concert with TDH-CV leadership and multi-disciplinary research study teams to support the discovery of new strategies to prevent cardiovascular diseases, providing project and operational management of funded pilot research studies and internal initiatives and serving as primary liaison between research team, core project teams, clinical operations teams, and Division of Cardiology and TDH-CV leadership.

In addition, the PD will serve in a research navigator function, building relationships and facilitating connections and collaboration among researchers, clinicians and engineers across the university and medical campuses. The PD will serve as a primary liaison between TDH CV and relevant Duke entities, such as SOM, Duke Heart and CVRC. Finally, the PD will participate in building strategic partnerships and investment opportunities with industry, federal agencies, and philanthropy.

Specific Work Performed

· With TDH-CV leadership, develop strategic direction and opportunities assessment internal and external to Duke.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the program. Assist with monitoring and evaluating program effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative research techniques; help investigate trends, and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness.
  • Oversee total program funding, including facilitation of any research awards, new-faculty research start-up funds, acquisition of new funding; monitor and reconcile expenditure of budgeted program funds.
· Serve as liaison for TDH-CV between research groups and the leadership; Lead development of the communications strategy for TDH-CV and establish effective relationships with key Duke resources and stakeholders.
· Provide project management and leadership for TDH-CV projects and programs. Work with principal investigators to generate and execute project work plans, modifying as needed to meet changing project needs and requirements. Work in partnership with faculty investigators and project teams on proposal development, providing input on operational feasibility, study workflow, and resource requirements and availability.
· Oversee and monitor project progress, identify potential risks or issues that may compromise project team performance, and problem solve to remove or mitigate issues; escalate challenging project issues to TDH-CV leadership as appropriate. Generate and maintain a lessons-learned archive.
· Serve as a research navigator, perform needs assessments through faculty interviews and facilitate connections among researchers, clinicians and engineers with common interests; identify resource gaps or barriers that limit collaboration opportunities.
  • Facilitate the development of program level IRB submissions, including ongoing maintenance and renewals.
  • Scientific concepts and research design. Conduct and synthesize literature reviews, and independently develop proposals or protocols. Assess and determine solutions for operational shortcomings of proposals and protocols. Identify and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure adequate design, implementation, and testing of study aims.
    • Possess a keen understanding of intellectual property, inventions, patents, technologies and serve a liaison with applicable Duke entities, including the Office of License and Venture, counsel, etc. as needed.
    • Take appropriate action and communicate with TDH-CV leadership to facilitate and manage ongoing external relationships
    • Develop and direct the implementation of communications strategies, including a framework for communicating and building awareness of and support for the initiative's mission and activities with both internal and external constituents. This includes oversight of the web content, print and marketing materials, and marketing activities for outsides audiences, as well as communicating and building awareness and support for the mission and activities describing academic goals and programs.


    · Work with DHTS, FORGE and other entities to design and execute IT support for TDH-CV initiatives
  • Identify biorepository resources at Duke (samples, data sets, tracking tools, etc) and interface with investigators and administrators to make these available to TDH CV scientists.
  • Work with TDH-CV leadership to identify external partnership and donor opportunities, and to develop strategic plan for sustainable programs.
  • Liaise with external entities seeking to identify opportunities for collaborating on programs, projects, and research opportunities, identifying Duke faculty and other possible collaborators, and coordinating the activities of collaborators to successfully submit applications and execute approved programs as it relates to the TDH-CV program.
  • · Participate in negotiation and execution of relevant contracts and agreements with study sponsors, Duke SOM, CROs, vendors, and consultants.
    · Participate in organizing conferences, symposia or workshop meetings on topic areas relevant to TDH-CV strategic interests, including creating web-based knowledge repository.
  • Develop program milestones and timelines. Revise and implement program operation strategies as appropriate.
  • Prepare written and power point reports on TDH CV activities and progress
  • Work with the SOM webmaster assigned to TDH-CV to manage and provide updates to the website content and design.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

Bachelor's degree. Additional training in Project Management coursework or certification in Project Management is desired.

Experience

Work requires 4 years of program/project management, business or administrative management; Experience in medical education/publishing, clinical research, or medical product development is desired. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

PREFERENCES:

Master's degree in the Biomedical Sciences other related scientific field. Relevant work experience may substitute for formal training in engineering.

PhD degree.

6+years preferred, or a commensurate combination of education and experience.

Skills/Abilities
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills are a must.
Must have ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-task, and matrix type environment.
Must be able to function well within a team structure.
Proficient in project management and planning tools (e.g., MS Project, MS Visio, Basecamp, Smartsheet)
