About the Unit
The Network for College Success (NCS), at the School of Social Service Administration (SSA) is a comprehensive professional learning network for high school improvement. The mission of The Network for College Success is to cultivate postsecondary readiness and success for all students by translating research into practice and supporting school leaders to organize their schools for improvement and innovation. Through cross-school learning communities and job-embedded coaching, we support district leaders, principals, teachers, and counselors to: \tStrengthen school leadership \tImprove teaching and learning \tSupport freshmen transitioning into high school \tPrepare students for quality postsecondary options \tIntegrate research and data into daily practice to drive continuous improvement
Through coaching, and facilitation of cross-school professional learning, the Postsecondary Coach is responsible for providing critical supports to school leaders who oversee counseling departments and postsecondary leadership teams. The goal is to build the capacity of school leaders to understand adolescent development as it relates to improving postsecondary outcomes. We believe that creating a college going culture that supports integrated identity and agency will impact how students see themselves and build their capacity to make informed choices. We also seek to examine issues of practice through an equity/research informed lens.
- Continuously engage in self -reflective practice around issues of equity and impact on educational practice.
- Coach counselors to lead whole-school change processes in their schools and strengthen and support school-wide college-going culture.
- Co-design and co-facilitate quarterly professional development for counseling and postsecondary teams.
- Provide on-site coaching to school counselors and coaches to build partnerships across leadership teams .
- Work in partnership with schools to develop a 9-12 articulated transitions approach with school leaders.
- Coach school leaders to support student success that incorporates adolescent development and supports viable postsecondary options.
- Collaborate in developing and monitoring NCS goals for the postsecondary work and provide regular communication regarding the work, challenges and results to NCS staff and school principals.
- Collaborate with NCS staff to articulate best practices for counseling and coach programming across NCS schools.
- Work collaboratively with NCS staff to develop and sustain vision and mission for the work of the postsecondary work and its role in organizing schools for improvement and innovation.
- A relentless commitment to public school improvement in Chicago with a particular focus on equity for students of color.
- Understand and demonstrate knowledge of managing data and supporting data driven decisions.
- Strong facilitation skills and demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse constituencies including principals, faculty, students, teachers, foundations, and advocacy and parent groups.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues, school participants and partners.
- Ability to respond with flexibility to demands and requirements of the project.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and team and self-evaluation.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to integrate and effectively utilize technology for professional productivity.
- Capable of exercising sound judgment, tact, courteousness, reliability and employing good decision-making skills.
- Familiarity with the research from UChicago Consortium, ASCA Model, IL SEL Standards, and data tracking systems like Naviance.
- Strengths in at least one of these domains: college and career, social-emotional learning, and academic success.
- Experience with coaching adult leaders in school settings.
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, or related field required
- Master's degree preferred
- Minimum five years high school counseling/coaching experience in Chicago Public Schools or comparable urban school district
- Professional Educator License with School Counselor Endorsement (PK-Age 21) preferred
- Bilingual a plus
- Equity or restorative justice background
- Work with youth required
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Ability to work in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
- Familiarity with Naviance
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work on multiple projects at any given time, and ability to deal effectively and professionally with people.
- Attendance at meetings around the city requiring ability to travel to various sites in and around the city.
- Daily access to a reliable car
