Staff Research Associate I

Job description

University of California, Irvine

Staff Research Associate I

Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the research coordinator and postdoctoral fellows, the incumbent is responsible for the successful execution of all assigned research studies. Our research involves observational studies of human participants, but they are not clinical trials. Our current longitudinal prospective studies focus on the effects of maternal psychosocial stress and nutrition during pregnancy on infant outcomes, and on maternal-placental-fetal endocrine, immune and genetic mechanisms that may mediate these effects. The major outcomes of interest include fetal growth, brain development, birth phenotypes (birth weight, length of gestation, premature birth), and newborn and infant body composition, obesity risk, metabolic, endocrine and immune function. The methods used to collect data include structured interviews and questionnaires with parents, laboratory-based as well as ecological momentary (ambulatory) assessment protocols with mothers and their children, bioassays of biological tissues (blood, saliva, urine), genotyping and expression studies of DNA and RNA samples, whole-body imaging of infants and children using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and abstraction of clinical data from the medical records.

We are looking for strong candidates with broad interests, backgrounds and experience in studies of early development. Experience in infant body composition assessments is strongly desirable. Specific responsibilities for this position include screening, recruitment, scheduling and retention of study participants (pregnant and postpartum women and their infants), collection of psychological/behavioral, biological and clinical data at study visits, administration of anthropometric (body measurement) assessments, handling, processing and storage of biological samples, and management of research databases. Appropriate specialized training in one or more of the above methods and protocols will be provided. Fluency in English and Spanish is required. A minimum two-year commitment is desirable.
