The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks a collaborative and energetic leader to serve as its president and lead the campus into its next phase of impact and excellence.
Established in 1864 as Maine’s first public institution of higher education, the University of Maine at Farmington is committed to transformative learning and the development of its students in the liberal arts tradition. In addition to liberal arts and science fields, academic offerings of note exist in teacher preparation and other pre-professional areas. UMF is distinct and distinguished in enrolling, educating, and holistically supporting large numbers of low-income and first-generation students in the type of close-knit and immersive environment typically reserved for students at more expensive and wealthier private institutions.
Reporting to the University of Maine System Chancellor, James H. Page, the President is the executive officer of UMF, one of seven institutions in the University of Maine System (UMS). The President will be expected to demonstrate campus and System leadership in the context of collaborative membership in UMS and the One University Model. The President will also devise and implement a strategic vision that capitalizes on UMF’s strengths and considers optimal enrollment and selectivity and academic programming and delivery to graduate students with future focused skills, competencies and credentials; lead the campus in creating and implementing a sustainable financial plan and budget that correspond to the strategic vision; generate resources to sustain and enhance the institution; demonstrate support for the culture of caring for others that predominates UMF; and, effectively represent and advocate for the University with prospective partners and students.
The next president will possess a collaborative approach to leadership with local stakeholders, with University of Maine System institutions, and with the UMS Chancellor’s office and leadership team; a commitment to identifying and celebrating the exceptional contributions of faculty, staff, and students while motivating individuals and groups to strive for a better future; understanding of the region’s evolving demographics and workforce needs along with ideas for navigating these trends successfully; the ability to lead and manage an organization through a time of cultural change; a commitment to the combined and transformative power of the liberal arts, professional education, and graduate education, as well as to the University’s mission of providing students with an academically challenging and intellectually vibrant environment; and an appreciation for the University’s distinctive, rural location in Western Maine.
