The School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) welcomes applications for a Lecturer in Geology to instruct in the Environmental Sciences Program (B.Sc.). We seek an excellent teacher and team player to be an active part of a growing geoscience group.
All faculty at UTRGV are required to exhibit a commitment to Teaching Excellence. Candidates must show experience and qualifications that meet SACS-COC and other departmental/college accreditation requirements.
Teaching: Faculty will be required to teach in a classroom, laboratory, seminar or clinical setting as assigned and appropriate. Given that UTRGV is a distributed university, faculty may be required to teach online, teach hybrid courses, or teach at different campuses. Faculty are expected to integrate next generation technology and customized learning to maximize student success.
Service: Service to the university community is an integral part of the faculty members’ responsibilities. In accordance with the UT System Regents’ Rules, faculty will perform curricular tasks auxiliary to teaching and research, e.g. serve on committees, attend to administrative and disciplinary tasks/functions, and foster intellectual curiosity and integrity in the student body; and use professional expertise to perform services that benefit society and the broader professional community.
Research: Although the primary focus of Lecturers will be in the areas of teaching and service, UTRGV encourages its entire faculty, including Lecturers, to engage in scholarship. Scholarly activities include presenting their work at professional meetings, publishing, and securing external funds to support their scholarship. Performance of other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• MS degree in geoscience or closely related field plus sufficient graduate credits to be qualified for teaching upper level courses
• Ability to enthusiastically teach freshman level geology lectures and labs
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
.• Teach introductory level geology (physical and historical), including laboratory teaching as needed
• Teach upper level Geology courses in the applicant’s area of expertise
• Manage geology laboratory materials and training of laboratory assistants. Assignments may be at the UTRGV Edinburg and/or Brownsville campuses
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience teaching Physical and Historical Geology courses
• Interest and experience in organizing and leading field trips related to teaching activities
• Ph.D. in geosciences from an accredited university

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
