Dean of Sustainability, Business & Career Technologies

Elgin Community College (ECC) is a comprehensive, fully accredited community college located in Elgin, Illinois, one of its most rapidly growing cities. Our district encompasses 360 square miles, serving 400,000 people, 11,000 businesses with four public school districts and 15 high schools. ECC was selected as one of five Illinois community colleges to participate in the national Achieving the Dream (AtD) initiative. is a long-term national initiative that collaborates with community colleges to help more students earn degrees, complete certificates, or transfer to four-year institutions to continue their studies. The park-like setting of our 145 acre Main Campus offers instruction spanning nine major buildings with beautiful views. ECC also offers classes throughout the northwest suburbs of Chicago with more than 100 off-campus locations.


Provide academic and administrative leadership associated with the Division of Sustainability, Business and Career Technologies. This includes developing and managing the divisional budget, equipment purchasing, hiring and evaluating full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and support staff, development and implementation of new programs and curriculum, and management of facilities (new Public Safety and Sustainability Center; programming, planning). This position will maintain relationships with president, vice presidents, other deans, board members, the foundation board, program advisory boards, administrative support staff, and partners in business industry, government officials and other educational institutions.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Develop and foster community partnerships and educational alliances with external government and industry leaders in the areas of Sustainability, Career and Technical Education, Workforce Education & Development.

2. Recruitment, selection, hiring, and retention of faculty and staff.

3. Curriculum development, analysis, review, and schedule development.

4. Provide academic, administrative, and institutional leadership within the college and division (e.g. Academic Planning, Alliance for College Readiness, Strategic Enrollment Management).

5. Evaluation of instruction and support staff, professional development, and supervision of faculty and staff.

6. Provide fiscal leadership for the division including budget development and management, grant writing and implementation.

7. Administration of Collective Bargaining agreements. Problem solving and conflict resolution.

8. Administrator in charge of programs and operations for the Center for Emergency Services

9. Perform other job-related duties as assigned which pertain to the job description

Required Qualifications:

1. Masters' degree and 4000 hours of work experience in one field represented within the division OR Masters' degree and 2 years' experience working with Career Technical Education programs of study
2. Minimum 2 years' administrative experience in the associate dean, dean level, or administrative leadership role
3. Minimum 2 years' experience in an educational collective bargaining environment
4. Familiarity with the Illinois Community College Board or equivalent agency
5. Knowledge of the comprehensive mission of the community college
6. Appreciation of diversity and promotion of multi-cultural awareness.
7. Appreciation for and ability to work with individuals from many cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
8. Ability to work collaboratively and build teams with administrators, faculty, and staff
9. Extensive experience developing and managing a budget
10. Ability to build external partnerships
11. Proven skills in strategic planning, including developing a vision, defining actions, ensuring implementation, and evaluation.
12. Demonstrated success in grant writing and management Experience in utilizing evaluative strategies to improve teaching and program effectiveness Strong understanding of student learning and assessment processes
13. Demonstrated success serving as an advocate for the department and faculty in a large organization
14. Knowledge of Sustainability, Business, and Career Technical Programs, including planning and future trends
15. Knowledge of Career and Technical Education

Desired Qualifications:

1. Doctorate degree preferred.
2. Teaching experience in higher education or community college preferred
3. Police and/or fire science training and first responder training preferred.
