The School of Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks applications for an open rank tenure/tenure track position in Human-Autonomy Collaboration which includes topics at the intersections between the disciplines of human-systems interaction, human factors, cognition, robotics, autonomy, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Examples of relevant research areas include: machine models of human performance; design and analysis of systems that feature cognition, control, and decision making between humans and machines; cyber-human systems; social robotics; cognitive engineering; and virtual and augmented reality. Application domains of interest include but are not limited to: autonomous vehicles and transportation, robotics, health and medicine, privacy and security, digital manufacturing, environmental sustainability, smart cities, and generative design.
The faculty member has the opportunity to join the Link Lab, UVA's world-class center of excellence in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). This initiative includes faculty drawn from multiple departments and builds on UVA's strengths and pioneering work in areas such as body sensors, smart buildings, wireless health, resilient infrastructure, and intelligent transportation systems. The lab hosts a unique, collaborative cohort of researchers dedicated to solving the most critical problems at the intersection of the cyber and physical worlds. via cross-cutting research transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries.
The position will be in the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The Department is the home for world-leading research and education in the design and management of complex systems that integrate people and technology at scales ranging from personal devices to large-scale infrastructure.
A doctoral degree in engineering, computer science, or closely related field is required prior to the start date of this position. Candidates must be able to contribute to the teaching mission of the Department, which offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in systems engineering and in civil engineering. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research, as appropriate for the candidate's rank, and a commitment to teaching excellence. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Preference will be given to candidates who would flourish in and support a collaborative, diverse community and who would complement or expand the strengths of the department's current faculty.
