University Communications


Position is responsible for newswriting and editing, producing web content and developing communications strategy in support of the integrated marketing and communications plan for the institution, with the goal of raising Florida State University's regional, national and global presence.

Duties include media relations, answering inquiries for information and public record requests, and coordinating interview requests from external media. Pitches university events, news items and articles to local, state, national and international media for publication. Provides media relations services at university events as necessary. Organizes and coordinates university news conferences and photo opportunities. Monitors and shares press clips. Strong interpersonal, telephone and email communications skills critical.

Produces university news releases and media advisories, news articles and web content in AP style, as well as statements and newsletters for university administrators.

Provides administrative support including but not limited to web and digital editing. Establishes and maintains professional contacts with key constituents in various agencies and departments.


A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience reporting in a professional environment; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of the same experience.

Strong writing and research skills.

Experience writing news releases on deadline.

Ability to think creatively and carry out specific program concepts with limited supervision.

Attention to detail; effective time-management and organizational skills.

Ability to work as part of a team on tight deadlines.

Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with fast-changing situations are necessary; often in public.


Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related area.
Knowledge of and experience using content management systems, social media platforms, and photo editing applications including Mailer Lite, WordPress, and Meltwater News

Pay Plan

This is an A&P (Administrative and Professional) position.

Criminal Background Check

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
