Assistant Director, Bioprocess Research

Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC offers academic courses to NC State University undergraduate and graduate students and professional development courses to workers already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess and analytical services to a wide range of clients from academia and industry. It is looking to expand its reach into bioprocess research and GMP manufacturing.
Essential Job Duties: The Assistant Director, Bioprocess Research, will lead the start-up, operation, and growth of BTEC's new Bioprocess Research program. He/she will track potential grant opportunities, partner with researchers internal and external to NC State, and then write proposals that lead to funding. He/she will communicate with sponsors and collaborators, as well as publish papers in technical journals and present research at national and international meetings. The Assistant Director, Bioprocess Research will be responsible for managing large projects as well as performing/supervising laboratory experiments involving upstream bioprocessing, downstream bioprocessing, and analytical technologies. Other duties and responsibilities include: Leadership: * Start-up and lead BTEC's new Bioprocess Research program. * Grow BTEC's Bioprocess Research program so that grants for bioprocess research cover operating costs. * Manage large research projects and staff involved in execution. * Serve as a member of the Technical Activities Committee of the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL). Laboratory Activities: * Manage laboratory activities required for internal and sponsored projects involving upstream bioprocessing, downstream bioprocessing, and analytical technologies. * Provide leadership to scientists, post-docs, and students performing internal and sponsored research projects in fermentation, cell culture, downstream bioprocessing, and/or analytical technologies. * Source and support start-up of laboratory equipment. * Advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in bioprocess research projects. Grants: * Stay current on Request for Proposals from major sponsors and coordinate grant proposal activities within BTEC. * Write grant proposals that provide funding for sponsored research projects. * Network with Principal Investigators with novel products or processes and offer BTEC support for bioprocess research on future grant proposals. * Work closely with BTEC's Bioprocess & Analytical Services program to create partnerships with Principal Investigators for bioprocess research and process development/scale-up projects. Communication/Outreach: * Communicate as needed to university and industry collaborators, service providers, sponsors, colleagues, and students. * Publish results in scientific journals and present work at local and national meetings. * Develop and deliver lectures on emerging technologies in upstream and downstream bioprocessing in courses taken by North Carolina State University students and Industry professionals. * Actively promote BTEC locally (within NC), nationally, and internationally. * Gain international recognition. * Provide leadership to BTEC and outside organizations. * Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Education/Experience: * PhD degree in a life science, chemical engineering, or related discipline.* * At least eight years experience in the research and development of upstream (fermentation and/or cell culture) and/or downstream (cell separation, cell lysis, chromatography, ultrafiltration, etc.) bioprocesses at scales of greater than 1 Liter. Experience while in PhD program can be included. *Required degree must be completed prior to start date
Department Required Skills: * Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. * Good written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form. * Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with university and industry collaborators, service providers, sponsors, colleagues, and students. * Ability to work both independently and as a team member. * Experience in safety and biosafety practices.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Research, development, and/or scale-up projects focused on growing prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic cells, separating and/or disrupting cells, and processing cell culture broths to increase purity of proteins, other biomolecules, or virus particles for biopharmaceutical production. * 2+ years of GMP manufacturing of clinical or commercial materials * Experience writing research proposals that received funding. * Record of publications and presentations at national and international meetings. * Training and supervision of laboratory personnel. * Project management experience that led to successful completion of a project.
