Primary Function of Organization Unit: The TRIO Programs provide academic enrichment support to low-income, first-generation students. Collectively all programs serve students from middle school through college. The mission of the NC State programs is to provide equal access to quality education for participants who have academic potential to succeed in college and to encourage and motivate participants to enroll and graduate from college.
Essential Job Duties: The focus of the Academic Coordinator is to facilitate educational, cultural, and social development enrichment activities for high school program participants. The position also entails providing participants with an educational environment conducive to obtaining a high school diploma and assisting with preparation to gain entry into a post-secondary institution. Other Responsibilities include: * Provide program services insuring the personal, vocational and educational guidance for each program participant * Provide academic assistance to specified students designated as a part of the rigorous curriculum * Assist participants with the college application and financial aid process * Recruit program participants within the target schools * Plan cultural and educational activities for participants * Visit all assigned schools * Maintain accurate files on participants by entering contact information * Assess needs for each participant * Coordinate summer personnel, which includes developing a hiring timeline, creating and disseminating marketing materials for personnel recruitment, coordinating the interview process, and selecting and notifying staff of employment offer utilizing NC State Human Resources policies * Develop training modules for orientation and summer training * Coordinate and facilitate orientation and summer training * Supervise staff during six-week Summer Academy * Develop and administer Summer Staff Training Assessment providing written feedback to the Assistant Director * Coordinate and support all academic elements for both Upward Bound programs, which includes intensive academic monitoring along with transcript and report card review, and course selection and advisement * Maintain students' academic records and files to ensure accuracy of each student's academic progress * Secure and locate on-site buildings for academic year and summer programming
Minimum Education/Experience: * Bachelor's degree and an equivalent professional training and experience. * Experience in academic skill development, counseling and working with non-traditional students and culturally diverse groups. * Database software proficiency required. * Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Publisher and Power Point. * Proficient knowledge in utilizing social media technology as a professional tool.
Department Required Skills: Must be able to work independently, handle ambiguity, manage multiple projects, schedules and deadlines, as well as possess good interpersonal skills. The candidate must also be able to network with on campus constituents, targeted community members, and public school personnel.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Masters Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Science or equivalent field required. * Two years of experience in academic skill development, counseling and working with non-traditional students and culturally diverse groups preferred.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver's License required at time of hire.
