Post-Doctoral Fellow

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow with a strong background in cellular neuroscience to work with Dr. Paco Herson in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Herson's laboratory is focused on identifying novel therapeutic strategies to provide neuroprotection and improve functional recovery in the post-ischemic brain. In vivo animal models, slice electrophysiology, histological, immunohistochemical analysis of cell death, and neurobehavioral testing are utilized for the interdisciplinary studies performed in our laboratory. This is a unique opportunity to perform slice electrophysiology experiments following translational animal models of brain ischemia (stroke and cardiac arrest).

The applicants must hold a Ph.D. level degree ideally in neuroscience or pharmacology with at least one first-authored publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Research experience that includes electrophysiology is preferred.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, keen to acquire new knowledge and skills and eager to produce scientific publications. The candidate is expected to have strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data, as well as effective written communication skills to publish results.

Supervision Received

Daily interaction with the PI and the lab manager.

Supervision Exercised

Coordinate work with other departmental personnel as needed.

Examples of Work Performed

This job entails slice electrophysiology, Western blot, qPCR, and neurobehavioral testing. Other duties as directed by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The applicant should have experience with techniques in electrophysiology, microscopy and a good understanding of pharmacology. Excellent record keeping ability, communication skills, and ability to work independently.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in neuroscience or other scientific discipline appropriate to the job.
  • Experience with electrophysiology preferred.
  • Experience with microscopy preferred.
