Research Associate

Job description

Working Title: Research Associate

Position Type: Professional Research Staff

Department: Department of Molecular Phys and Biological Physics

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 11-26-2018

Posting Summary:
The Bushweller Laboratory in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate. The successful candidate will perform research in structural biology of protein-RNA interactions and various small molecule screening efforts targeting transcription factors. The laboratory is interested in understanding the role of RNA binding in regulating critical regulators of blood cell development, hematopoiesis, and leukemia. This person will also contribute to efforts to develop small molecule inhibitors of transcription factors that are targets in leukemia. The project requires a combination of techniques from molecular biology, protein crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, screening, and biochemistry.

The initial job duties for this person will be completing PAR-CLIP studies to identify the RNA targets of selected proteins in cells. Subsequently, the structure of protein-RNA complexes will be determined using either X-ray crystallography or NMR spectroscopy. This person will also be carrying out small molecule screens with target transcription factors using fluorescence based methods and characterizing the ligand-protein interactions using NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. This person will also be responsible for training graduate and undergraduate students. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art crystallography and NMR-spectroscopy facilities.

The highly motivated candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related field by appointment start date. Candidates must have at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal, extensive experience in cloning and protein expression and purification, and should have a basic knowledge of protein crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The ability to work independently yet to interact well with a diverse group of scientists and students is essential.

To apply visit and search for posting #0624517. Applicants should complete a candidate profile through the [email protected] website and provide a cover letter, CV, and a list of three references.
