The Center for Addiction and Prevention Research (CAPR) seeks multiple postdoctoral researchers to join our clinical translational research team to work with and learn from world-renowned health promotion and disease prevention researchers. Based in the Department of Public Health Sciences, CAPR faculty create effective interventions for tobacco control, alcohol misuse, obesity, and cancer prevention and control. In addition to a 25-year relationship with the US Air Force, they collaborate with civilian cancer, health, and community centers nationwide to work with diverse populations.
Working with a primary mentor, Research Associates will identify and pursue opportunities within CAPR's portfolio of programs. Positions reappointed annually up to 3 years (continuation based on progress and success the previous year).
The Charlottesville-Based Associate (civilian focused) will work on NIH-funded and other projects, learning to prepare competitive grant proposals, and tailoring existing/developing new health promotion interventions. The candidate will utilize existing data sets from previous civilian and military research and have the opportunity to publish from this data. The Associate will collaborate with researchers from all of the University's schools, and be mentored to pursue a research career. The San-Antonio-Based Associate (military focused) will be part of ongoing studies funded by NIH and the Department of Defense, have the opportunity to use data from previous research to explore new questions, be involved in the development of grants and interventions, and experience relationship building with military chain of command to conduct successful interventions within the Air Force. The successful candidate will also learn grantsmanship and publish manuscripts. The Combined-Track Associate will spend the first year in San Antonio, engaged in health promotion and disease prevention research, learning the intricacies of working with a specialized, understudied population, relationship building with military partners, publishing from existing large datasets and conducting pilot studies. In years 2 and 3, the Associate will be in Charlottesville, working on grantsmanship and continuing to publish peer reviewed publications.
Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or MD in behavioral sciences, nutrition, exercise science, public health, psychology, sociology or related field; have a strong interest and experience in community-based research, including working with at-risk and diverse communities. Expertise and training in health promotion, interest in translational science, outstanding written and oral communication skills, including record of peer-review publications and scholarly presentations, are required. Candidates expected to have strong work habits, ability to work independently and with diverse groups, be creative, highly motivated, and able to interact professionally in both research and community environments. Strong data management, statistical analytic skills and experience in conducting tobacco, alcohol abuse, obesity, and opioid interventions preferred, as is previous work in federally-funded research.
Positions offer a highly competitive salary and benefit package, and up to $20,000 a year to support independent research, conference travel, etc. Research Associates have access to UVA's extensive grants and research support network.
