College of Engineering: Professor (Open Rank) - Bioengineering (102831)

Job description

Professor (Open Rank)
Department of Bioengineering
College of Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, with expansion of our faculty and undergraduate student body over the next 5 years. With the recent completion of extensive building renovations and the launch of our new engineering-driven Carle-Illinois College of Medicine on the UIUC campus, there are many opportunities to impact both fundamental and translational research. To support these aspirations, the Department seeks a full-time Bioengineering faculty member for a tenure-track or tenured position in the broad area of computational bioengineering: including computational systems biology, computational genomics, computational neuroscience, bioinformatics, or other related areas. A successful candidate will be expected to be a leader of highly interdisciplinary research, be a visionary for the future of engineering in medicine and biology, and perform academic duties associated with our B.S., M.S., Ph.D. and M.D. educational programs.

The University of Illinois is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit http://go.illinois.edu/EEO. To learn more about the University's commitment to diversity, please visit http://www.inclusiveillinois.illinois.edu.

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate (preferred degree and/or demonstrated accomplishments in Engineering, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, or related fields), outstanding academic credentials, and the ability to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Dual-degree candidates with an M.D. are encouraged to apply, as the opportunity for a joint appointment within our network of partnering clinical institutions is available. A successful candidate will also have the unique opportunity for a leadership role in our newly established engineering-driven Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, the first of its kind with a curriculum integrating engineering from the start. An appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will be a priority. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Start date is expected in the Fall of 2019, however this is negotiable.

A qualified senior candidate may also be considered for a tenured full Professor position as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is backed by a $100-million gift from the Grainger Foundation. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established, which will provide incredible opportunities for world-renowned researchers. The two main research areas for this initiative are Bioengineering and Big Data. More information regarding the Grainger Initiative can be found at: http://graingerinitiative.engineering.illinois.edu.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is an internationally top-ranked research institution. Our interdisciplinary and collegial academic community encourages innovative research programs that may involve partnerships with Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, newly announced Data Sciences Institute, or Carver Biotechnology Center, among many other research centers, clinical sites, and educational programs on our campus.

Applications should be submitted by visiting http://my.bioen.illinois.edu/join and uploading in one PDF file:1) a cover letter with current contact information including email address, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statements for research and teaching goals, 4) statement on commitment to diversity, and 5) the names of three or more references. The statement on diversity should address past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service. If interested in being considered for the aforementioned Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative opportunity, the candidate should explicitly refer to "Grainger Initiative" in the cover letter and should include "Bioengineering" or "Big Data" (whichever is applicable) as one of the candidate's preferred research areas when prompted during the online application process.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by December 15, 2018. Early applications are strongly encouraged as interviews may take place during the application period, but a decision will not be made until after the closing date.
