Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
As the chief academic officer and reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs works with senior administrators, faculty, and staff to fulfill the university mission and achieve the strategic priorities of Fayetteville State University and the University of North Carolina, especially the goals of increasing the number of graduates who are well-prepared for careers and/or graduate/professional education. The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs has primary responsibility for fostering active and engaged learning experiences for students; supporting professional development and advancement for faculty and staff; promoting enrollment growth and degree attainment, especially among student historically underserved by higher education; encouraging innovative uses of new technologies in instruction, administration, and student services; increasing research, service, and outreach; increasing revenue from fund raising and grant writing; and improving the academic profile and reputation of the university. The position is frequently called upon to represent the university and its academic mission to the lawmakers, board members, UNC officials, the general public, and other external constituencies.

Description of Work Continued:
Specific responsibilities include:
• Provides intellectual and academic leadership for the university's educational mission.
• Models faculty excellence and is responsible for providing guidance to the college deans
• Supervises all units within Academic Affairs, including colleges/schools, academic and student support offices, enrollment management units, community service and outreach programs, sponsored research and technology transfer, and grant-funded programs.
• Fosters high quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of curricula, instruction (face-to-face, online, and hybrid), and assessment in graduate and undergraduate programs and general education.
• Gives oversight to division-wide efforts to increase student retention and degree completion and to improve graduate preparation for careers and/or professional/graduate school.
• Ensures that all personnel actions pertaining to faculty, staff, and administrators within the division are administered fairly and in compliance with all relevant policies.
• Guides strategic and operational planning and assessment within the division in support of institutional and professional accreditations and continuous improvement.
• Supports the development of research agenda consistent with the university missions, supporting faculty and staff in the pursuit of external funding as well providing appropriate recognition and incentives for all research.
• Works with Institutional Advancement to promote fundraising strategies among academic departments and units.
• Leads faculty, deans, and other administrators in developing new sources of funding and revenue generation.
• Manages the academic affairs budget, including funds from all sources (state appropriations, tuition revenue, grant funding, donors, etc.), allocates funding to all units in the division, and requires fiscal effectiveness and accountability by all unit heads.
• Provides/supports effective faculty and staff development programs that meet the diverse needs of employees at different stages of their careers.
• Ensures compliance with all policies and regulations of FSU, the UNC System, the federal government, accrediting bodies, and other relevant external agencies.
• Leads efforts to establish partnerships with other educational institutions, community organizations, businesses, and others to advance the educational, service, and research programs of the university.
• Promotes faculty and staff engagement in goal setting and decision through shared governance.
• Guides FSU in serving as a resource for the educational, social, cultural, and economic transformation of southeastern North Carolina and beyond.
• Provides written and oral reports to the Chancellor, FSU Board of Trustees, the UNC Board of Governors, the North Carolina General Assembly, and other internal and external constituencies as requested.
• Other tasks and projects assigned by the Chancellor.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• An earned doctorate in a relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
• At least five years of higher education administrative cross-divisional experiences with progressive responsibility, including experience as an academic dean.
• Evidence of strong, distinguished and extensive accomplishments in teaching, service, and research commensurate with appointment to a faculty position with tenure.
• An accomplished record of success in academic program development, enrollment growth, faculty-staff development and support, research initiatives, and community outreach.
• Experience promoting innovation, including use of technology, to improve student learning and assessment of learning.
• Significant experience with strategic and operational planning, assessment, accreditation initiatives.
• Success in working with faculty, staff, and other administrators in a transparent, collegial and collaborative manner.
• A record of successful work with diverse populations of students and colleagues.

Knowledge skills and abilities:
• Have an appreciation of the HBCU mission: possess a deep understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural background of the student population.
• Possess a broad knowledge of the academic enterprise: demonstrated success in leading and managing academic programs within a complex institution composed of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs; strong grounding in academic financial management; expertise in academic planning, resource allocation, assessment, accreditation (at all levels) and developing a research profile.
• Have excellent writing, research, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with ability to work effectively with other senior administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
• Empowers faculty and staff by soliciting ideas and input, communicates decisions openly and has an understanding of shared governance in the academy.
• Demonstrated effective and visionary leadership: a servant leader with evidence of having the courage to make difficult decisions; sound judgment and the ability to unify to work towards a common goal; nimbleness to anticipate the needs of the shifting higher education environment. Strong interpersonal skills: extraordinary communications skills; the political savvy to work effectively in a highly complex environment; ability to inspire and motivate others; willing to be highly visible on campus and in the community.
• Have the ability to represent Academic Affairs and FSU to internal and external constituencies and partners.
