About the Unit
The University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC) is an integral component of the University of Chicago Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division (BSD), the largest of four Divisions of the University that also includes the Pritzker School of Medicine. The UCCCC administers 6 established scientific programs, and the Cancer Center Support Grant from the National Cancer Institute provides funding for 11 Shared Facilities. The Center comprises over 215 faculty members from over 20 departments, with members being awarded over $60 million Direct Costs in peer-reviewed cancer research grants, and $17 million in non-peer reviewed grants and contracts. The activities of the Center are broad and varied including research, patient education and support, fundraising, marketing, clinical trials management, community outreach, and grant administration.
The UCCCC-IT is the Informatics/IT group responsible to develop, test, implement, support and maintain applications that will primarily address the needs of the functioning of the UCCCC structure (Administrative applications), and also the local cancer research community, through solutions that will be used to help collect, organize and analyze data on clinical and non-clinical research. The UCCCC systems contain sensitive information, regulated by laws and best-practices (i.e. HIPAA, IRB), that require specialized skills and attitude from the Informatics/IT team members. Security and quality are keywords for this team; applicants should feel comfortable with this type of working environment.
- Will have to maintain the administrative applications, developed in different technologies (Ruby on Rails and MS .Net with MS Sql Server and Oracle on the backend).
- Work with at least two other programmers, and it is expected that those three (minimum) programmers will share all knowledge about all in-house developed applications. Documentation of the code generated by the programmer is expected to be clear, structured and efficient.
- Familiarity with source code control systems (Git, SVN etc.) is needed as also a strong level of comfort with model view based design patterns (MVC, MVP or MVVM).
- Learn basic technologies from external systems, mainly Velos eResearch, in order to use data coming from, or moving into, those databases.
- Will be trained on those systems. Some new interfaces will be based on SOA services using REST principles; therefore, SOA and REST understanding will be required in briefly after the programmer begins activity
- Confidentiality related to sensitive University matters such as, strategic initiatives, trade secrets, quiet periods, and scientific discoveries yet to be put in the public domain
- Needs to be comfortable designing and developing applications following model view design patterns.
- Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of software development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Use standard software development applications and tools.
- Use analytical and quantitative skills and diagnostic techniques to resolve problems.
- Manage complex technical details.
- Communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff.
- Work in a collaborative team environment.
- Work on a flexible schedule which will include occasional late night and/or weekend hours.
Education, Experience or Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field.
- Advanced degree in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- Dual degree or concentration in system design.
- Microsoft developer certifications or equivalent for Ruby on rails.
- Minimum of three years combined experience in designing and developing web applications using Microsoft.Net Framework, Ruby on Rails, Angular JS or similar framework.
- Strong knowledge of Object Oriented Programming and Services Architecture Concepts.
- Extensive relational database design experience with complex SQL and data modeling.
- Web design and layout concepts with focus on cross browser compatibility.
- SQL Server, ASP.NET, and C-sharp.
- Velos data architecture.
- SOA and REST based service development preferred.
