Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) at North Carolina State University (NC State) is to enable and lead state-of-the-art research through acquisition, development, maintenance, training, and access to major analytical and materials characterization instrumentation. The education of students in state-of-the-art materials characterization analysis techniques is a noted priority. The AIF is a collection of physical and human resources, instruments, and tools that enables principal investigators, students, postdocs, and researchers external to NC State to conduct activities that advance their research programs and the mission of the institution as a whole. The AIF supports state-of-the-art scanning and transmission electron microscopes, X-ray scattering and spectroscopy instruments, mass spectrometry, scanning probe and Raman microscopy, laser scanning microscopy, nanoindentation and extensive sample preparation facilities. Some of the extraordinary capabilities of these instruments include chemically-sensitive atomic-scale imaging, extreme-resolution SEM of insulating and soft materials, in situ high temperature and electric-field-dependent X-ray diffraction, cryogenic SEM of biological and soft materials, low-temperature TEM and in situ microscopy during heating, electrical current, immersion in fluids, and in flowing gases (to name a few). The AIF is positioned within the College of Engineering and is named an NC State Core Facility by the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI).
Essential Job Duties: North Carolina State University invites applications for a Transmission Electron Microscopist to oversee its transmission electron microscopy (TEM) facilities within the NC State Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF). The AIF supports a wide variety of physical sciences research and education programs at NC State and within the Research Triangle Region. The position will have primary responsibility for management and operation of the TEM facilities in the AIF, which currently houses a probe-corrected and monochromated FEI Titan G2 STEM/TEM, an Thermo Fisher Scientific Talos F200X Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (S/TEM), and a JEOL 2000FX TEM and auxiliary equipment, including energy dispersive x-ray spectrometers, a range of in situ holders, electron energy loss spectrometers, CCD cameras and an extensive sample preparation laboratory. The Laboratory Manager will oversee the training, maintenance/calibration, educational, outreach and user-base development activities of the TEM facility and will assist users in performing advanced microscopy, when needed.
