The University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science has openings for two Research Engineers.
The role of the Research Engineer will be to support efforts in developing advanced techniques and software for real-time network intrusion detection across multiple enterprise networks. High-speed network traffic collection and analysis, and attack simulations are integral parts of this research effort. The position also entails working with graduate students, preparing technical presentations and reports, developing code, maintaining computing infrastructure and systems, and identifying new research capabilities.
Specific responsibilities may include:
Developing novel algorithms for detecting attacks such as DDoS, APT, ransomware; Developing software to capture and analyze high-speed network traffic; Benchmarking and evaluating network cyber security solutions; Developing documentation; Working with team members to develop software libraries and other tools; Assisting team members in program meetings.
The Research Engineer is expected to (i) be able to work independently, (ii) select appropriate research techniques, (iii) be proficient in software engineering best practices, (iv) be able to adapt techniques to the specific problem at hand, (v) mentor graduate students, and (vi) be able to work with other teams.
Strong candidates will have: a) an M.S. degree in computer science/engineering with a few years' experience, or a Ph.D. in computer science/engineering or a related field at the time of hire; b) expertise in capturing and analyzing network traffic; c) strong programming and software engineering skills; and d) strong written/verbal communication skills. Particularly strong candidates will have: a) expertise in machine learning techniques related to networks security; b) expertise in analysis of vulnerabilities and exploits; c) strong systems experience; and d) have competence in providing one-on-one technical support.
