The Department of Pathology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Healthcare Professional (Cytotechnologist) position. This position is posted as Open Rank and depending qualifications and department needs, appointments may be made at the Entry or Intermediate level.

Nature of Work

The cytotechnologist is responsible for the microscopic examination of cells in order to detect cancer and/or other abnormalities, and report these results to the pathologist. The cytotechnologist will also assist in collection and processing of FNA aspirations for immediate evaluation. This position may be filled at the entry through intermediate professional level, depending on the successful candidate's education, experience and suitability for a particular position.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Performs microscopic examination of gynecologic and non-gynecologic samples for the detection of cancer and/or other abnormalities, with accuracy and in timely manner.
  • Provides direct diagnostic interpretations on normal gynecological specimens.
  • Provides indirect diagnostic interpretations on abnormal gynecological specimens and non-gynecological specimens, and forwards cases to the pathologist for review.
  • Assists with fine needle aspirate collection and preparation, maximizing cellular recovery and preservation. Provides adequacy statement.
  • Keeps accurate work records in compliance with regulatory and departmental requirements.
  • Maintains certification by completing appropriate continuing education requirements, and participates in annual proficiency testing.
  • Evaluates the technical quality of prepared specimens.
  • Performs quality control on 10% of negative prescreened gynecologic specimens.
  • Monitors/orders supplies as needed
  • Maintains staining lines and microscopes in satellite laboratories.
  • Provides training and guidance on cytologic preparations to cytology residents and laboratory assistants.

The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commemorate with skills and experience. This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level Appointments:
  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, biological science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Graduation from an accredited cytotechnology training program.

Intermediate Appointments:
  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, biological science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Graduation from an accredited cytotechnology training program.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in a clinical laboratory technologist position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT - For both Entry Level and Intermediate Level:
  • Cytotechnologist certification through The American Society for Clinical Pathology, CT (ASCP).
  • Please attach a copy of current, passing proficiency testing certificate with application.

Conditions of Employment: Must be willing and able to...
  • Lift, push, and/or pull up to 20 lbs.
  • Work in an environment that may expose you to fumes, chemicals, liquid nitrogen, extreme cold, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
  • Frequently wash your hands, as biohazardous materials may be present.
  • Sit and stand for long periods of time, frequently walk, and bend/stoop, as well as execute repetitive motions.
  • Work with complex and sharp laboratory equipment, and various chemical and biological solutions.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment when handling biological samples and hazardous chemicals.
  • Work within a high-level secured facility.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience assisting with Fine Needle Aspirations.
  • Experience working in a teaching hospital setting.
  • Master's degree in cytopathology.

Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Abides by State, Federal, and governing agency (CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA) guidelines and regulations.
  • Must be able to discern cytologic changes present in a disease process, specifically malignant or pre-malignant changes to a high level of accuracy.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and work in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to make sound decisions working independently, and in a team setting.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with clinicians, physicians, patients, and staff, and to maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct and maintains positive working relationships.
  • Recognizes potential specimen and/or processing errors and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Demonstrates willingness to accommodate schedule changes in times of staffing shortages.
  • Demonstrates knowledgeable in preparatory and staining techniques, as well as alternate processing techniques.
