Overview

The Theory Department at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory is seeking a full time computational scientist to participate in the addition of a free-boundary capability into the 3D MHD equilibrium code SPEC and application of this to study the W7-X stellarator. This is an entry-level position at rank of Associate Research Physicist.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will initially work closely with one or more senior members of the Research Staff in carrying out a program of computational and theoretical research associated with 3D MHD fixed and free-boundary equilibria, as calculated using SPEC, in realistic experimental geometry, implementing efficient numerical methods, introducing improved mathematical and theoretical descriptions of toroidal 3D MHD equilibria, and performing verification and validation calculations, and incorporating SPEC into existing and future stellarator optimization algorithms.

Qualifications



Applicant should have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics or a closely related discipline, with a strong computational and mathematical background. Some knowledge of magnetically confined plasmas and stellarators is desirable. English communication and writing skills are required, as is being able to work as a team.
