Located five miles from downtown Boston, Tufts University is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the highly-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The Tufts University Department of Athletics sponsors 30 varsity sports, 20 club sports and a variety of intramural sports and activities. Tufts Athletics has won nine NCAA team championships since 2010 and has finished in the top 10 of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in each of the last seven years, including a program-best 3rd place finish in 2016-17. The Department of Athletics oversees the University’s Physical Education offerings and the Personalized Performance Program for students, staff and faculty. The Department manages all Athletics facilities, including the Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center, which opened in 2012. The Assistant Director of Athletics for Business Operations provides oversight of accounting and financial reporting functions for the Department of Athletics. This position performs day to day business office activities including complex clerical and accounting-related functions involved in the preparation and maintenance of financial and other related business records. This position serves as a departmental liaison, performs clerical financial functions, prepares and analyzes financial statements and budget reports, monitors and reconciles all financial accounts and compiles accounting reports for various constituencies. This position reports to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics.

The qualified candidate will:

  • Oversee all financial reporting, accounting, and budget forecasting functions; aid in the creation and maintenance of fiscal controls and records.
  • Ensure all revenue, deposit and expense transactions are coded according to Athletics and University standards and policy.
  • Analyze and prepare budget reports, statements and spreadsheets for internal and external use.
  • Direct the reconciliation of all sport-specific program and Department transactions, including purchase orders, journal entries, invoices, credit cards, accounting transfers, payroll and other University financial reporting services.
  • Review expenditure requests, including travel requests, operations and supplies, equipment purchases, and professional services requests.
  • Prepare and submit annual reports: EADA, NCAA and Conference financial reports, post-season competition reports and ad hoc financial analysis reports.
  • Partner with Institutional Advancement to coordinate fundraising and development activities that are vital to the Department of Athletics’ operations.
  • Coordinate and supervise all Departmental Human Resources operations.
  • Build successful working relationships with constituent groups on campus such as Purchasing, Procurement, Payroll, Human Resources, Tufts Support Services, Advancement and Development.
  • Supervise several full-time coaches, the Department’s Athletics Administrative Coordinator and oversee multiple sport programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or Senior Associate AD.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of intercollegiate athletics administrative experience.
  • Working knowledge of organizational business systems, operational and fiscal analysis, relevant computing skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records concerning overall fiscal operations.
  • Demonstrated qualities that contribute to a setting where teamwork is highly valued; ability to work cooperatively with staff members and supervisors.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to providing leadership, guidance and support to a high functioning and driven coaching staff.
  • Ability to train others on financial software, skills and procedures and to provide work lead direction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred.
  • Master's Degree in Athletic Administration, Education Administration, Business Administration or related field.
  • Prior experience working in Athletics Business Operations.
  • Previous collegiate coaching supervision.
