Disability Access Advisor
The Disability Access Advisor is primarily responsible for providing support to The Washington Center’s (TWC) students with disabilities, in building out TWC’s capacity to better serve this population, to program, raise awareness, and inform in regards to all forms of disability. Collaboration across the organization is necessary. The caseload for this position is primarily students with a wide range of disabilities such as learning disabilities, ADHD, psychological disabilities, physical disabilities, medical disabilities and other as defined by the ADA. The Advisor conducts disability eligibility analyses, provides referrals, approves reasonable accommodations, and recommends students for services to support their access within The Washington Center program. The advisor will also provide behavioral and wellness programming to the community. The position is housed in the Office of Student Services and Community Life, but also works closely with the Office of College and University Relations and the Advancement Department.

STUDENT DISABILITIES SUPPORT AND PROGRAMMING 70%
- Serve as TWC’s point person and advocate for students with disabilities, ensuring appropriate accommodations in housing, worksites, and classrooms to support student success. Including establishing and maintaining clear guidelines for students qualifying for emotional support animals and service animals in accordance with local and federal laws. 15%
- Serve as an intake officer for incoming students’ disability applications. Follow up on disability documentation, and discuss reasonable accommodations for success with incoming interns, based on self-disclosure and documentation of disability. Issue Letters of Accommodation on behalf of the Office of Student Services.
- Work closely with the pre-arrival experience to support, guide, and challenge students who may present various support needs. 15%
- Develop programs, workshops, and panels that best prepare students to navigate the job search and understand issues surrounding disability. Facilitate orientation programming for incoming students with disabilities, as appropriate and needed. Create a programmatic impact fostering the idea of behavioral wellness for all students. 20%
- Provide data to Advancement for their utilization in reports, grants, and scholarship documents. 5%
- Execute at least one professional development session, surrounding issues of disability, behavioral health, diversity, and inclusion, for the following groups: TWC staff recruiters, Alumni-in-Residence, and internship site supervisors. 10%
- The advisor will serve as a member of the Central Staff on-call team for Student Services and Community Life and will supporting SSCL programming and large scale events which may include occasional evening and weekend hours. 5%
STUDENT RECRUITMENT 30 %
- Train recruiters on the promotion of the Leadership Initiative for Students with Disabilities. Strategize with the College and University Relations team regarding best practices for outreach to college disability services offices via email, social media, and phone calls. 10%
- Expand and maintain TWC’s network of institutional disability services contacts. Create and sustain tools to support on-campus recruitment efforts for the Initiative. Analyze post-visit data and organize necessary follow-up (specifically to disability coordinators), as necessary. 5%
- Conduct on-campus recruiting 2 - 4 institutions each semester to interest students in the program and make personal contact with leaders in disability service and/or counseling offices that have robust on-campus programs. 10%
- Other duties, as assigned, by the Director of Student Services and Community Life. 5%
Required Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Psychology, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Human Services, Social Work or a related field.
- 2-4 years of related experience required
- Understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities is required.
Preferred Education/Qualifications and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or related field
- Experience working with a fundraising database such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience advocating for students with disabilities in an educational or workplace setting.
- Knowledge of disability laws and implications for higher education including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the ADA Amendment Act of 2008
- High comfort level working with people with disabilities
- Strong writing, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; ability to think strategically and organize activity and information.
