Assistant Professor of Anthropology,

Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies

The Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position in Anthropology beginning August 1, 2019. 


Successful candidates will possess the following requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology. Individuals who are “all but dissertation” (ABD) will be considered but must have completed doctorate by December 2019.
  • Experience in GIS applications related to archaeological research, including experience with archeogeophysics.
  • Proven historic or prehistoric archaeology research experience.
  • Ability to teach introductory/advanced courses including introduction to archaeology, archaeology of the Southeast, summer field school, cultural anthropology, and anthropological theory, as well as area of research specialty.


Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Teaching experience at the college level. The Department will be particularly receptive to candidates who can involve undergraduate students in field and laboratory work as a way of promoting undergraduate active and experiential learning.
  • Research and field experience in the Southeastern U.S.
  • An active field school or field school experience.
  • Successful grant applications or funding.
  • A proven record of scholarly activity and engagement, and promise of future work in the field.


Once hired, responsibilities for this position include:

  • Regular publications in peer-reviewed sources is expected for all UTC faculty.
  • Willingness to engage in a variety of instructional modalities in introductory and upper level courses, including online instruction, and especially High Impact Educational Practices (HIEP).
  • Participation in departmental and university service.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to building an equitable and inclusive scholarly and collegial environment.
