Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe. The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995. The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface and air transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Associate will be responsible for a number of varying tasks. Typical analysis tasks include analysis of sensor data for freeways and arterial streets, use of spreadsheets and statistical analysis tools for data reduction, and development of models to describe data attributes. The Research Associate is also expected to be involved in application of traffic analysis, including both macroscopic and microsimulation tools. The Research Associate may assist or supervise field data collection and/or equipment installation in support of research projects.
Minimum Education/Experience: Minimum of a Master's degree required.
Department Required Skills: Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills. Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Possess good organizational skills and requires minimal supervision; detail oriented. Ability to make presentations utilizing good communication and facilitation skills. Ability to work independently as well as be part of a team. Demonstrate a high level of initiative and ability to multi-task. Should be comfortable with public speaking and able to communicate effectively, as individual will be required to give presentations to steering committees on research. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Relevant PhD or Master's with experience preferred.
