Position Summary
The Social Science, Communication & Health Division at the Portland Community College, Rock Creek campus has an open full-time Ethnic Studies/ Humanities position scheduled to begin fall 2019. This position is responsible for working collaboratively with faculty and administrators across the PCC district (four campuses) to further develop the college-wide Ethnic Studies Program. Ethnic Studies at Portland Community College is a new academic program developed in direct response to student demand for culturally-relevant curriculum centered on the perspectives of historically marginalized groups. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development and implementation of the Ethnic Studies program across the PCC district.
Dependent on the instructor's qualifications, the teaching workload may include teaching a variety of courses from disciplines including but not limited to; Ethnic Studies, Humanities, Chicana/Chicano Studies, Social Justice, and/or Native American Studies. This position is based primarily at the Rock Creek campus; however, instructors may be called upon to teach at another campus as the program develops.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

As the largest post-secondary institution in Oregon, PCC serves more than 75,000 full-time and part-time students. Founded in 1961, the college serves a five-county area that includes Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas, and Columbia counties. ABOUT THE CAMPUS
The 256-acre Rock Creek campus is about 12 miles west of downtown Portland in the growing Beaverton-Hillsboro area. The campus serves many students from neighboring Washington County, the second most populated county in the state. Washington County is home to an increasingly diverse population, having the highest percentage of Asians (10%) and Latinx (17%), including cities with thriving and growing Latinx communities, such as Hillsboro and Forest Grove (each 24% Latinx).

PCC Rock Creek maintains a variety of academic programs, student support services and community events that center the experiences and perspectives of the campus' increasingly diverse student body. In addition tobeing a sanctuary college, PCC Rock Creek is home to Oregon's first and only DREAM Center. The center was envisioned and created by PCC students and provides a brave space for our undocumented/DACA-mented community. Rock Creek is also home to PCC's College Migrant Assistance Program and the OregonLeadership Institute—a partnership between the college and the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement. Signature events on campus include the Multicultural Center's Semana de la Raza, a week-long celebration of Latinx culture, and the annual Women of Color Empowerment Conference hosted by the Women's Resource Center.

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse student populations and advancing equitable student success through highly engaged and high impact instructional practices;
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse colleagues across the college district to share responsibility for program review, annual assessment, curriculum development, and other non-instructional faculty responsibilities;
  • Willingness to take risks and be innovative;
  • Demonstrated understanding of community college students and their educational needs;
  • Two or more years of teaching experience, including experience teaching courses that center the history and experiences of people of color;
  • Ability and willingness to work with student groups and engage with the broader community through programming, outreach, service learning and social justice initiatives;

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree or PhD in Ethnic Studies, Comparative Ethnic Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, American Ethnic Studies, OR

    Master's degree or PhD in African American Studies, American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Border Studies, Central American Studies, Chicano/a Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Indigenous Nations Studies, Mexican American Studies, Native American Studies AND 4 or more quarter credit hours of graduate credit in Ethnic Studies, OR

    Master's degree or PhD in any social science or humanities field AND 12 or more quarter credit hours of graduate credit in Ethnic Studies, OR

    Master's degree or PhD in any social science or humanities field AND dissertation/thesis employing an interdisciplinary approach to the study of race and ethnicity.

    This list may not be inclusive as there are other degree titles that may be appropriate for the subject and related areas. The Division Dean in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair will make a recommendation to the Dean of Instruction about the applicability of a particular degree that is outside the scope of this list.

    Starting Salary Expectations
    Initial Salary Placement up to Step 3 ($56,274) will be based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.

    - 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 days/year)

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Official transcripts are required to be submitted within 2 weeks of offer date for degrees required in the stated Instructor Qualifications.
  • Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation. Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
